Race to Regionals, 2005: Week of March 7th |
March 9th, 2005 Previous Week's Entry: February 28th, 2005 Note: The rankings in this article are not completely identical to those currently in Troester, as some teams did not enter this weekend’s scores in time to make the Troester rankings. Regional Qualifying Scores and rankings have been adjusted to reflect these scores. Central Region Seeded teams: #3 Alabama Unseeded teams currently in position to qualify to Regionals: #23 Auburn Next in line: #38 Bowling Green This is the deepest region from top to bottom and perhaps the most interesting race to Regionals. As expected, Kent State was able to make a large leap in the standings (#29 to #18) by dropping the 188 score it was carrying in its RQS. Ohio State has to be thrilled with this move, as it opens another spot to Regionals for this region. However, Kentucky and Kent State are looking very tenuous in their seeded spots, which means that all of the teams fighting for the last few Regionals berths have to be a little nervous and will probably continue to be so until the bitter end. Kentucky (current RQS of 194.765) has only away meets (3 meets) left. Kent State (194.705) has two away meets and one home meet remaining. These two teams are in similar positions, with away counting scores in the high 193s and 194s but home counting scores in the 195s (up to Kentucky’s 196.025 this weekend). Both of these teams will need a couple of away 195s to solidify their positions as seeded teams. As Kentucky has one more away meet than Kent State has, they are probably in a little better position to do this. Auburn (194.51) has two away meets and one home meet remaining. Their counting home and away scores are in a tighter range than the previously mentioned teams, which means that no single score will have as big an effect. They will need to consistently score well in these next three meets to maximize their RQS. Regardless, they do not have a good shot at becoming a seeded team. Michigan State (194.345) has only home meets (3 meets) left. They have been fairly consistent in home and away scores, however they have a larger range of scores overall than Auburn does (low counting score of 193.675, high counting score of 195.475). Since Michigan State currently has four away scores counting toward their RQS, one of these can be replaced by a home score, so they have a little more wiggle room left than other teams would in this position. However, they do not have a good shot at becoming a seeded team. Ohio State (193.53) has three away meets remaining, and they have a 193 and a 191 that could be replaced. Even if they manage this with 194s, it will still be very hard for them to catch any of the other teams in their region. They will have to depend on both Kent State and Kentucky maintaining seeded positions, a scenario that is very iffy. Bowling Green (192.78), with one of the most shocking disparities between home and away scores of any of the teams in the hunt for Regionals, has only two meets left, both on the road. It is unlikely that they will be able to catch any of the teams ahead of them in this region. As things stand now, the following would be the individual qualifiers to Regionals: All-Around- Kristina Menne, Centenary Vault- Jessica Guyer, Bowling Green Uneven Bars- Jessica Bradley, Bowling Green Balance Beam- Jessica Guyer, Bowling Green Floor Exercise- Jessica Guyer, Bowling Green
North Central Region Seeded teams: #1 Utah Unseeded teams currently in position to qualify for Regionals: #20 Minnesota Next in line: #34 Iowa The biggest shakeup in this region is Southern Utah’s lost seeded positions, which forces Iowa out of an unseeded berth to Regionals. With teams at #14, #16, #19 and #20, it’s anyone’s guess how many North Central teams will be seeded. Denver (current RQS of 195.085) is looking solid in its seeded position, and Brigham Young (195.055) is looking good as well. BYU has four meets left (two home, two away), compared to the three meets that most other teams have remaining, which gives them a little edge. Considering how close they are in RQS to the teams immediately above them, this edge could be very valuable. Minnesota (194.655) has one home meet and two away meets remaining, and is in good position to fight for a seeded berth. Southern Utah (194.57) has five meets remaining (two home, three road)! That means that they have plenty of room for improvement and are very much in position to fight for a seeded berth of their own. Utah State (194.28) has two home meets and two away meets remaining, and they do have a few lower scores to drop that could have a real impact on their RQS. However, it would be a real stretch for them to grab a seeded spot, which means that they will most likely remain at the mercy of the schools ranked ahead of them in their region. They need at least four North Central teams to be seeded in order to grab an unseeded berth. Iowa (193.75) has only two meets remaining, one home and one road. They have little room to move up or down in the regional rankings and need five teams to be seeded out of the North Central region. As things stand now, the following would be the individual qualifiers to Regionals: All-Around- Liz Grajewski, Iowa Vault- Kortny Williamson, Iowa Uneven Bars- Annie Rue, Iowa Balance Beam- Kortny Williamson, Iowa Floor Exercise- Kortny Williamson, Iowa
Northeast Region Seeded teams: #7 Michigan Unseeded teams currently in position to qualify for Regionals: #37 New Hampshire Next in line: #58 Pennsylvania #59 Yale Penn State made a big jump from #17 to #13 by replacing a 193 with the 195.55 they earned at Arizona State this weekend. That’s great news for Rutgers, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Yale, because it is looking a lot more secure that two teams will be seeded out of the Northeast Region, meaning that those four teams will be fighting for two spots instead of just one. New Hampshire looks very secure in the top unseeded spot. Rutgers (current RQS of 191.0) and Pittsburgh (190.705) have only away meets remaining (3 meets for Rutgers and 4 meets for Pitt). Both of these teams have room to solidify their positions as the last two qualifying teams, but Pittsburgh will likely overtake Rutgers in the race for position. Not only does Pittsburgh have one more meet, but they are still carrying a 188 score. Replacing that score alone will help them dramatically. While Pennsylvania (189.095 – one home meet, three away meets remaining) sat idle this week, Yale (188.845 – three away meets remaining) made up six tenths of the difference between them. Neither team should be counted out of the race completely, but it doesn’t look likely that either team will catch Rutgers or Pittsburgh. As things stand now, the following would be the individual qualifiers to Regionals: All-Around- Emily Petkun, Pennsylvania Vault- Alexis Zafferes, Temple Uneven Bars- Kathryn Fong, Yale Balance Beam- Kathryn Fong, Yale Floor Exercise- Lindsey Marranca, Cortland
South Central Region Seeded teams: #2 Nebraska Unseeded teams currently in position to qualify to Regionals: #22 Arizona Next in line: #32 (tie) Illinois (loses tiebreaker, which is the highest score not including the six scores included in the RQS) In one of the most interesting races, Illinois, tied with Arizona State last week for the last Regionals berth, is now tied with Missouri for that spot. Missouri, which, along with Bowling Green (Central Region), has the largest disparity between home and road scores of any of the teams in the hunt for Regionals, wins the tiebreaker over Illinois with a home score. Arizona (current RQS of 194.54) has one home meet and two away meets remaining. They have a chance to earn a seeded berth, but not a particularly strong one. Assuming that they are not able to accomplish this, Arizona State (194.075), Missouri (193.965) and Illinois (193.965) will have to fight it out to the end. Arizona State, with two home meets and one away meet remaining, does have some 193 scores both home and away, two of which could be replaced. They are in a strong position to maintain an unseeded position at Regionals. Missouri, with one home meet and two away meets remaining, will need to strengthen its away scores to significantly improve its RQS. Illinois, with one home meet and two away meets remaining, has both home and away scores in the high 193s to replace. This will be a close battle. Illinois-Chicago (193.085) has three away meets and one home meet remaining, which is a bit of an advantage over the teams with only three meets remaining, but it appears that they have too much ground to make up to make it to Regionals this year. As things stand now, the following would be the individual qualifiers to Regionals: All-Around- Tara Boldt, Southeast Missouri Vault- Veronique Meunier, Illinois-Chicago Uneven Bars- Cara Pomeroy, Illinois Balance Beam- Kara Kapernekas, Illinois Floor Exercise- Kara Kapernekas, Illinois
Southeast Region Seeded teams: #6 Florida Unseeded teams currently in position to qualify to Regionals: #26 North Carolina State Next in line: #39 Maryland Still looking very stable, there has been a small amount of shuffling, but none of consequence. North Carolina State has overtaken North Carolina for the top unseeded spot. George Washington has overtaken Towson for seventh place in this region. North Carolina State (current RQS of 194.34) has two home meets and one away meet left. North Carolina (194.195) has three away meets remaining. West Virginia (193.97) has one home meet and three away meets remaining. These three teams could shuffle into any order, but in the end it probably won’t matter, because Maryland (192.71 – one home meet, two away meets remaining) would have a hard time catching any of them. As things stand now, the following would be the individual qualifiers to Regionals: All-Around- Rachel Martinez, Maryland Vault- Amy Stack, George Washington Uneven Bars- Mandy Pascual, Maryland Balance Beam- Alexandria Gatch, Maryland Floor Exercise- Virginia Scott, Maryland
West Region Seeded teams: #5 UCLA Unseeded teams currently in position to qualify to Regionals: #19 Stanford (At least one of this weekend’s scores was not in Troester on time.) Next in line: #42 Sacramento State This race is getting very interesting. Stanford, which had a very slow start to the season, has an excellent chance of advancing into a seeded position. This is great news for Sacramento State and San Jose State, who will be fighting for the unseeded spot this move would open up. Sacramento State (current RQS of 192.175) has two home meets and one away meet remaining. Close behind is San Jose State (192.13), which has one home meet and two away meets left. This will be a race to the finish. As things stand now, the following would be the individual qualifiers to Regionals: All-Around- Greta Leach, San Jose State Vault- Dominique Ingram, Alaska Uneven Bars- Alexis Tsurumoto, Sacramento State Balance Beam- Melissa Genovese, Sacramento State Floor Exercise- Stefanie Aeder, Sacramento State |
