Race to Regionals, 2005:  Week of March 23rd

March 23rd, 2005

Previous Week's Entry:  March 16th, 2005

Note: The rankings in this article are not always identical to those currently in Troester, as some teams do not always enter their scores in time to make the Troester rankings.  Regional Qualifying Scores and rankings in this article have been adjusted to reflect these scores.

This week, maximum RQS scores have been added.  These maximum scores can only be attained by obtaining or tying a season high score in the final week of competition.  At the bottom of this page, you can see team rankings for the top 36 schools by maximum possible RQS.

Central Region

Seeded teams:
#2 LSU (current RQS 197.01/maximum RQS 197.2)
#5 Alabama (196.74/196.91)
#13 Central Michigan (195.54/195.925)

Unseeded teams currently in position to qualify to Regionals:
#19 Kentucky (195.07/195.475
#22 Auburn (195.025/195.3)
#27 Kent State (194.72/195.075)

Next in line:
#31 Michigan State (194.625/194.765)
#32 Ohio State (194.44/194.67)

There are no major changes in the Central Region this week, but Kentucky and Auburn are inching closer to seeded position.  With the current #18 mark being 195.155 Southern Utah), it looks iffy that even Auburn’s maximum RQS of 195.3 would be enough for a seeded spot after this weekend’s scores are in.  That makes Kentucky the only team in this region with a good chance of becoming seeded.

Meanwhile, Kent State has fallen back a bit from Kentucky and Auburn, and the race between Kent State, Michigan State and Ohio State has become more interesting.  It is mathematically possible for Michigan State to pass Kent State, but Michigan State would have to max out its RQS or come very close to the maximum, and even then it would only be enough if Kent State does not improve or improves by an extremely small amount.  The situation between Ohio State and Michigan State is similar.  It is mathematically possible, but not likely, for Ohio State to catch Michigan State.  It is not possible for Ohio State to catch Kent State.

What this means is that if Kentucky and Auburn remains unseeded, the final berth to the Central Regional will go to either Kent State (very likely) or Michigan State.  If Kentucky or Auburn becomes seeded, Kent State will definitely earn an unseeded spot to Regionals, and either Michigan State (very likely) or Ohio State would earn the last berth.  If Auburn and Kentucky both earn seeded spots, which, as explained above, looks unlikely, Kent State, Michigan State and Ohio State would have the unseeded berths to Regionals.

As things stand now, the following would be the individual qualifiers to Regionals:

All-Around-
Kristina Menne, Centenary
Karley Walek, Ohio State
Jolene Worley, Eastern Michigan
Kristin DiPietro, Bowling Green
Cherisse Marier, Western Michigan
(Next in line- Kristen Coleman, Michigan State)

North Central Region

Seeded teams:
#1 Utah (current RQS 197.02/maximum RQS 197.4)
#9 Iowa State (196.23/196.46)
#14 Brigham Young (195.445/195.625)
#16 Denver (195.31—final RQS)
#17 Utah State (195.25/195.52)
#18 Southern Utah (195.155/195.45)

Unseeded teams currently in position to qualify for Regionals:
#23 Minnesota (195.0/195.265)
#35 Iowa (194.135/194.44)
#59 Air Force Academy (189.78/190.27)

Next in line:
#75 Wisconsin- La Crosse (183.025- final RQS)
#76 Hamline (180.995- final RQS)

Southern Utah, after spending only one week out of the top 18, has now climbed back into that prestigious group, making a remarkable six North Central teams currently in position for seeded Regionals berths.  Minnesota, at #23, could mathematically join that group, but it looks unlikely that even their maximum RQS of 195.265 would be a top 18 score after this weekend.

It is almost impossible for #14 Brigham Young to fall out of the top 18 (the furthest they could fall is #19, and that would take them not improving their RQS while five other teams—Arkansas, Utah State, Missouri, Kentucky and Southern Utah— all have excellent performances).  The most important question in this region is how many of #16 Denver, #17 Utah State and #18 Southern Utah will be able to hang on to their positions.

There will be no change of order between Minnesota, Iowa and Air Force.  They will be waiting to see how things play out with the teams above them.

As things stand now, the following would be the individual qualifiers to Regionals:

All-Around-
Ashley Koechel, Wisconsin-La Crosse
Alison Eagles, Wisconsin-Eau Claire
Rhian Paulson, Wisconsin- Stout
Amy Bickler, Winona State
Jessica VanDenHeuvel, Winona State
(Next in line- Vanessa Virbitsky, Wisconsin-Oshkosh)

Northeast Region

Seeded teams:
#7 Michigan (current RQS 196.595/maximum RQS 196.905)
#11 Penn State (195.685/196.005)

Unseeded teams currently in position to qualify for Regionals:
#38 New Hampshire (193.075/193.625)
#50 Pittsburgh (192.1/192.46)
#52 Rutgers (191.87/192.25)

Next in line:
#58 Pennsylvania (190.1/190.615)
#61 Yale (189.59/190.215)

Mathematically, the Northeast Region is set.  Michigan and Penn State cannot fall out of the top 18.  New Hampshire cannot reach the top 18.  Pennsylvania cannot move into an unseeded spot.

As things stand now, the following would be the individual qualifiers to Regionals:

All-Around-

Emily Petkun, Pennsylvania
Anne McPherson, Yale
Emily Domenick, U. of Rhode Island
Carrie Santore, Brockport
Sarah Wesley, Southern Connecticut
(Next in line- Amber Smith, Brown)

South Central Region

Seeded teams:
#4 Nebraska (current RQS 196.75/maximum RQS 196.835)
#10 Oklahoma (196.13/196.205)
#15 Arkansas (195.43/195.59)

Unseeded teams currently in position to qualify to Regionals:
#19 Arizona (195.07/195.39)
#24 Missouri (194.87/195.505)
#25 Arizona State (194.85/195.3)

Next in line:
#33 Illinois (194.33/194.705)
#36 Illinois-Chicago (194.0/194.46)

A hotly contested race at one time, Illinois has now fallen far enough behind Missouri and Arizona State that it is mathematically impossible for them to move up in the region.  Illinois and Illinois-Chicago (who could catch Illinois) will have to hope that Arizona, Missouri or Arizona State moves into seeded position.  Missouri has the most room to move up of those three, thanks to a 193.05 currently still counting in their RQS.  Arkansas, who could fall no lower than #19, is looking fairly secure in a seeded berth.

As things stand now, the following would be the individual qualifiers to Regionals:

All-Around-
Tara Boldt, Southeast Missouri
Jennifer O’Neil, Illinois-Chicago
Lauren Newcomb, Illinois
Jackie Jaworowicz, Illinois-Chicago
Kristina Campos, Northern Illinois
(Next in line- Katie Bloom, Southeast Missouri)

Southeast Region

Seeded teams:
#6 Florida (current RQS 196.685/maximum RQS 196.835)
#8 Georgia (196.52/196.805)

Unseeded teams currently in position to qualify to Regionals:
#26 North Carolina State (194.84/195.045)
#28 North Carolina (194.675/195.0)
#29 West Virginia (194.66/195.125)

Next in line:
#37 Maryland (193.1/193.44)
#42 Towson (192.82/193.45)

Mathematically, the Southeast Region is set.  Florida and Georgia cannot fall out of the top 18.  None of the other teams can reach the top 18.  Neither Maryland nor Towson can move into an unseeded spot.

As things stand now, the following would be the individual qualifiers to Regionals:

All-Around-
Rachel Martinez, Maryland
Christina Ghani, Towson
Erin Aiken, George Washington
Heather Kaufman, George Washington
Tricia Long, William and Mary
(Next in line- Natalie Moore, James Madison)

West Region

Seeded teams:
#3 UCLA (current RQS 196.93/maximum RQS 197.24)
#12 Oregon State (195.575/195.73)

Unseeded teams currently in position to qualify to Regionals:
#21 Washington (195.03/195.17)
#29 Stanford (194.66/195.12)
#34 Boise State (194.29/194.64)

Next in line:
#41 San Jose State (192.945/193.42)
#42 Sacramento State (192.94/193.455)

Things are looking bleak for San Jose State and Sacramento State, who must have been excited about last week’s rise of Washington into the top 18.  It was short lived, however, and Washington only has the tiniest chance of moving back into seeded position, based on a maximum RQS ever so slightly higher than current #18 Southern Utah (195.155).  Given how many teams are in contention for those last few seeded spots, it is doubtful that Washington’s maximum RQS of 195.17 would do the trick.  One-time favorite Stanford now has no mathematical chance of earning a seeded berth.

The result is that this region appears to be pretty well set at this point.  Neither San Jose State nor Sacramento State can catch Boise State.

As things stand now, the following would be the individual qualifiers to Regionals:

All-Around-
My-Lan Dodd, California
Greta Leach, San Jose State
Debra Huss, Seattle-Pacific
Jennifer Greene, San Jose State
Brittany Hoffman, Cal State-Fullerton
(Next in line- Michelle Minotti, San Jose State)
