| UNC off to best start in school history
By Jeffrey Hahne
The University of North Carolina’s women’s gymnastics team is off to its best start in school history after defeating William & Mary and Rutgers in a three-way meet on Saturday, Feb. 19. The Tar Heels swept every event on their way to a season-high total of 195.85, improving their record to 13-0. Rutgers finished second with a score of 192.10 and William & Mary finished with 191.15. Senior Olivia Trusty won every individual event on her way to a team season-high all-around total of 39.425. Helping the Tar Heels was the fact no falls were recorded, as opposed to last week’s four falls. “The level of execution on bars and beam was a significant improvement from our last meet,” said North Carolina head coach Derek Galvin. “The important thing for us is to improve our execution.” The Tar Heels had two gymnasts tied for first on bars, as Olivia Trusty tied her season high, and Elisabeth Alsop set a career high of 9.90. The team’s total of 49.725 was a season high for the bars. North Carolina also set a season-high score on floor with a 49.125, thanks to Tar Heels taking the top four spots on the event. The Tar Heels also took the top four spots on vault, led by Trusty’s 9.875. Freshman Alice Xu tied Trusty for first place on balance beam with a 9.775. North Carolina took the top three spots for beam and the top four spots in the all-around. North Carolina will compete in the Wolfpack Invitational hosted by North Carolina State on Friday.
