The Struggle for Salt Lake begins in January, as the nation's top teams battle for one of the coveted 12 spots at the National meet. Teams have been hard at work through the Fall training period, trying to get that final edge that will propel them to Nationals. Once again, CollegeGymFans.com takes a preseason look at the top teams, as determined by the Coaches' Preseason Poll. It's a bit of deja vu in 2007, as defending champion Georgia has been picked by the coaches to once again win it all. Will the GymDogs be able to three-peat? Or will host Utah be able to recapture the crown? Only Utah and UGA earned first place votes in this year's PreSeason Poll. The Utes last won the title in 1995, when Georgia was hosting and the last time UGA has finished any lower than third. Since the NCAA officially began sponsoring the Championships in 1982, just four teams have taken the title, Alabama, Georgia, UCLA and Utah. Could #3 Florida be the fifth? Or will some other team emerge from the pack this year? Last year's National field included some newcomers who pulled big upsets to earn their ticket to Nationals. Last season's Regional meets showed the unpredictable nature of the sport. No team can be considered a lock to make the Championships, let alone the Super Six. This year, we're going to see a small modification of the NCAA code that should produce more regular season parity. As always, injuries unfortunately always seem to play a major factor, especially with teams battling for the final slots at Nationals. And, an exceptionally strong freshman class should have an unpredictable impact on teams that will only really become apparent later in the season. Location sometimes plays a factor in boosting the confidence of the host teams, and here are the 2007 Regional Host sites: Central: Alabama North Central: DenverNortheast: Michigan South Central: Arizona Southeast: West
Virginia West: Cal-BerkeleySo without further ado, here is a brief look at some of the top teams, as determined by the Coaches' Preseason Poll. |
