Can Suzanne Yoculan's Georgia Gym Dogs make it four in a row? With a home gym to their advantage, a full returning lineup, and some top notch frosh, UGA is an early favorite for the National Title. Off-season surgeries and injuries have impacted their preparation, but by the end of the season you can expect Yoculan and Jay Clark's squad to be leading the way. However, Utah and Florida, 2nd and 3rd a year ago, will seek to challenge UGA once again. Both lost key veterans from last season and will need to look to others, including some talented newcomers, to step it up this season. UCLA pulled it together at Nationals last season, surprising some teams with a strong finish. The Bruins look to be even stronger this season, with more depth from a large recruiting class and some key competitors returning from injury. Stanford returned to Nationals in a big way last season, after missing the last two finals. They also return their full lineup while adding some impact frosh. Several other teams will be pushing for a spot in coveted Super Six finale, including Super Six finalist Nebraska. The biggest new change in the NCAA this season is not to the Code used to score the athletes, but in the method used to qualify to Nationals. This season, all 36 teams will qualify to Regionals via a Regional Qualifying Score (RQS). In years past, only the Top 18 teams were seeded, and the next top three teams in each Region qualified. This new system will place a high priority on the RQS score, as only highest 36 scoring teams will advance. The Top 18 will still be seeded and distributed to the various Regions. Then, the remaining teams will be distributed according to geographical proximity. This new method will certainly focus much attention on scores and scoring differences between teams in different parts of the country. We'll have more on this as the season winds down. This season, the updates to the Code appear to be more moderate in nature. More on the new Code updates will be published in an article later this year in the Features section. As the fall progresses, these tables will be updated with the latest information, links and updates. Later in the fall, we will be adding in-depth previews. If you have additional updates or corrections, please submit them using the link above. |
