
Gymnastics Falls In Friday Action At Towson

TOWSON, Md. - - Despite some strong individual performances, the Ball State gymnastics team suffered a 196.075 to 194.500 setback at Towson Friday evening at TU Arena.
"While we underperformed as a group, there were still some exciting things that happened tonight," head coach Joanna Saleem said. "Getting Hannah back out and competing was great, and we were able to get some new athletes in some events and exhibitions. Overall, we know we are a better team than we showed tonight, we'll get back home in the gym and work some things out."
Junior Alauna Simms turned in the Cardinals (11-6) best individual score of the day, placing fourth overall on floor with a 9.825.
Senior Grace Sumner also put together a pair of solid routines, placing second overall on beam with a 9.800, while earning fourth on bars at 9.750. Both scores led the squad.
Rounding out Ball State's top routines were graduate students Hannah Ruthberg and Suki Pfister who tied for second overall on vault with scores of 9.800.
Rotation 1: Bars (48.375)
- Sumner led the Cardinals in the opening rotation, earning a 9.750 in her opening routine of the meet
- Middleton and junior Mary Rose Bellan each earned scores of 9.725, while freshman Jordanna Phillis landed at 9.700
- The Cardinals also counted a 9.475 from sophomore Ashley Szymanski
Rotation 2: Vault (48.725)
- Graduate students Hannah Ruthberg and Suki Pfister tied for the team lead and for second overall with scores of 9.800.
- Freshman Lindsay Girard was third on the squad at 9.725, while BSU also counted 9.700s from freshman Karli Mercer and senior Cai Afalla
Rotation 3: Floor (48.675)
- Sims led the Cardinals on floor, tying her career high with a 9.825
- Girard was next on the squad with a 9.775, followed by sophomore Ava Molina with a 9.725
- BSU also counted scores of 9.675 from Afalla and senior Carissa Martinez
Rotation 4: Beam (48.675)
- Sumner once again led the Cardinals in the final rotation, tying her season-best on beam with her third 9.800 of the season
- Szymanski was second on the squad with her 9.750, while Mercer was third with a 9.725 in her competitive beam debut
- The Cardinals also counted 9.700s from Molina and sophomore Lindsay Fuller
All-Around
- Middleton was Ball State's lone all-around competitor, placing second overall with a 37.875 … Her best score of the day was a 9.725 on bars.
