World Championships: Women's Preliminary Results

Written by

All four American women advanced to Finals at the preliminaries of the World Championships.

OU commit Ragan Smith qualified 2nd to the AA final and 1st on FX.  Florida commit Morgan Hurd qualified 6th in the AA and 2nd on BB.  Oregon State commit Jade Carey hit both of her events, qualifying 2nd on VT and 3rd on FX.  Ashton Locklear advanced on the UB as the 6th qualifier.  There were signs of nerves:  Smith had an extra swing on UB and a fall on BB.  Hurd had a fall on FX and stalled in a pirouette on UB.  Locklear fell on BB.  Carey's huge power and amplitude coupled with adrenaline produced some large landing steps and hops.

Two other gymnasts with NCAA ties also competed:  Boise State's Courtney McGregor of New Zealand placed 50th AA while 2020 Washington commit Cathy Eksteen (RSA) competed on BB and FX.
