Recruiting Tips: Preparing for the Unofficial or Official Visit

Jill Hicks Jill Hicks (c) CollegeGymFans.com, Jill Hicks

How to prepare for the official or unofficial visit:

It is very important that you see your visits as a “job interview”. Until you sign your National Letter of Intent, the college coach is still evaluating you on every phone call and visit. Yes, this should be a fun experience but the goal is to represent yourself at the highest level and also be yourself whether you are a scholarship potential athlete or walk-on.

Below are some important things to think about:

1. Be clear on what will be happening by reading the itinerary the coach may have sent
2. Be on time to all events and appointments scheduled on your itinerary
3. Dress appropriately. Wear the school colors and sweatshirt and not the rival school colors
4. No jeans with holes or super short shorts or low cut tops
5. Put cell phones away
6. Engage in every conversation possible
7. Ask lots of good questions. (See the ist below)
8. You are underage, make good choices even if others are not
9. Have fun! Be genuine and open up so they can get to know you
10. Research the college ahead of time. Know what the team is up to currently in the gym etc
11. Have academic questions on your list to discuss with coaches.

List of questions to ask:

1. Questions about applying to university
2. Am I on track with skills, what would you like me to be working on
3. Have I filled out all forms needed
4. What will it look like the week of signing period
5. Dorm or housing questions you may have
6. Any questions about scholarship money you may still have
7. What is expected of you throughout the year in regards to communication with coaches
