Abby Brenner transfers to Utah

Abby Brenner will spend her 5th year of eligibility at Utah, per her announcement.  She transfers from Michigan.

LSU's Aleah Finnegan won the silver on BB, as she finished the SEA Games with a total of four medals:  a gold on VT and in the team, silver on both BB and the AA.  Rachel Yeoh Li Wen of Malaysia won the Gold on BB.

Here are the results for the 16+ age groups in the JN 10 and JE 10 divisions at the Men's DP Nationals.   

LSU's Aleah Finnegan won the VT title at the Southeast Asia Games in Hanoi, Vietnam.   She is representing the Philippines, the country of her mother's birth.

Iowa GymAct won the title at the Men's USAG GymACT Championships, led by senior Evan Davis win the AA.  They snapped Arizona's (formerly ASU) streak of 14 straight titles.  Iowa's program was cut from full NCAA status following the 2020-2021 season.  They tallied 319.95 to defeat Arizona at 315.6 and the University of Washington at 302.35.  Iowa's Carter Tope finished 2nd AA, just 0.1 behind Davis.  Arizona's Jordan Williams was 3rd, just 0.15 off of the Davis.  

Davis had the top score on FX while Tope was first on PH and PB.  Yaroslav Owens-Pochinka of the University of Minnesota (another team that was cut last season) had the top mark on Rings.  Amari Sewell of Iowa was 1st on VT while teammate Zac Tiderman had the top mark on HB.

The USA Gymnastics Development Program Level 10 Nationals are this weekend (along with the Men's DP Nationals) in Mesa, Arizona.  Most of the future stars of the NCAA will be in action this weekend (Nearly all of the gymnasts on NCAA rosters reach Level 10 or higher; only the elites are not represented here, although newly qualified elites may still compete).  We'll be reporting on the top 10 AAers plus event winners and their future schools.  The main action takes places Saturday and Sunday.  You can follow the action at myusagym.com and FlipNow.usagym.org (subscription required).  

LSU's Aleah Finnegan placed 2nd AA at the Southeast Asia Games.  Competing for the Philippines, the country of her mother's birth, she held lead the team to their first team Gold in 30 years.  Despite suffering a fall on FX, she finished just behind AA winner Rifda Irfanaluthfi of Malaysia.  Her sets included two NCAA 10.0 SV vaults (Yurchenko 1 1/2, Pike Omelianchik)

Clemson has named former USU Associate Head Coach Erik Lewis as their new Associate Head Coach.  He worked in the same capacity with the new Clemson Head Coach, Amy Smith.

Denver Hires Hood as an Assistant

Denver has hired former USU assistant Stephen Hood as a new assistant.  He replaces Dave Kuzara, who is retiring.  Before joining USU for 2022, he was an assistant at TWU.

Georgia has signed JaFree Scott and transfer Josie Angeny of Kentucky for 2022-2023.  Scott originally committed to Florida but did not sign in the fall.  Scott is a senior international elite gymnast from GAGE and a 2018 US National Team member.  Although she has been slowed by injury, last season she placed 13th AA at the American Classic.      

Angeny is a three-time All SEC honoree who will start graduate studies at UGA.  A BB standout and a regular for the Wildcats on UB, she has also competed in the AA.

UCLA Hires McDonald as New Head Coach

UCLA has hired Janelle McDonald as their new Head Coach.  She has been an assistant at Cal for the last four seasons.  Prior to that she coached athletes through all levels up to elite during stints at WOGA, Legacy Elite and Desert Lights.

Dave Kuzara announces retirement

DU assistant Dave Kuzara has announced his retirement. He has had more than 30 years of experience coaching women's gymnastics as either a Head Coach (UMass, WMU) or assistant (Pitt, Michigan, Arkansas, WVU).

NCAA Champion Trinity Thomas of Florida won the Honda Award for Gymnastics, honoring the top women's gymnast in the NCAA this season.  She won the UB, FX and AA titles at the 2022 National Championships and won every single AA title in every session in the post-season.  She posted a total of 12 10s during the season, the 2nd most ever and was the first to win five First-Team All American awards in a single championship.
