The Race to Regionals:  Week of March 13th

March 13th, 2006

Race to Regionals– March 13, 2006

In the national rankings, #1 Georgia broke the 197 mark with its new RQS of 197.255, which is .83 higher than #2 Utah.  In comparison, Utah’s RQS of 196.425 is .735 higher than that of #14 Auburn, with 11 teams in between!  These 14 teams appear to be locks for seeded position.  #15 Arizona has fallen back from the top group a little but still appears secure.

Amazingly, there has been no movement in the important 16 – 20 ranks in the past week, but #20 Arkansas and #21 Minnesota continue to close the gap.  The table below gives a summary of what is in store for these six teams for the remainder of the regular season.  Remember that an away score is often more valuable than a home score, since a team’s RQS may only obtain a maximum of three home scores.

Team                         RQS          Remaining Meets

#16 Penn State          195.13        2 away

#17 Oregon State       195.045      2 home

#18 Kentucky             194.895     2 away

#19 Denver                 194.725     1 home, 1 away

#20 Arkansas             194.705     2 away

#21 Minnesota            194.67       1 home, 1 away

Central Region

Seeded teams:

#5 Alabama
#8 LSU
#14 Auburn
#18 Kentucky

Unseeded teams currently in position to qualify to Regionals:

#26 Ohio State
#27 Michigan State
#35 Kent State

Next in line:

#43 Eastern Michigan
#44 Western Michigan

Alabama, LSU, and Auburn continue to appear to be locks for seeded berths, and Kentucky is tenuously hanging on to its own seeded berth.  Ohio State (193.66) and Michigan State (193.61) are solidly in position for two of the unseeded berths.

This week’s Central Region shakeup is Kent State’s (192.885) jump over Eastern Michigan (192.135) and Western Michigan (192.07) to decidedly take that final unseeded position.  Kent State was able to replace a 189 with a 193, which meant RQS improvement of nearly a point.  At this point, it will be hard for any of the lower-ranked Central Region teams to catch them.  However, Kent State will have to watch Kentucky nervously for the next two weeks, in hopes that the latter does not fall out of the top 18 and take an unseeded berth to Regionals instead.

As things stand now, the following would be the individual qualifiers to Regionals:

All-Around-

Cherisse Marier, Western Michigan
Jolene Worley, Eastern Michigan
Rebecca Fuss, Eastern Michigan
Kristina Menne, Centenary
Heather Carroll, Western Michigan
(Next in line- Jessica Neel, Central Michigan)

North Central Region

Seeded teams:

#2 Utah
#4 Iowa State

Unseeded teams currently in position to qualify for Regionals:

#19 Denver
#21 Minnesota
#23 Brigham Young

Next in line:

#33 Southern Utah
#34 Utah State

Iowa State and Utah remain locks for seeded positions to Regionals, and Denver (194.725) and Minnesota (194.67) are just barely outside the top 18.

This is one of the most exciting races to Regionals, with Southern Utah (193.03) and Utah State (192.955) in essentially a dead heat.  Each is striving to be ahead of the other two weeks from now, in hopes that either Denver or Minnesota or both can pull into seeded position.  #38 Iowa (192.575) has fallen back a little but is not yet out of the hunt.

As things stand now, the following would be the individual qualifiers to Regionals:

All-Around-

Jessica Parenti, Utah State
Leah Sakhitab, Southern Utah
Liz Grajewski, Iowa
Meagan Lewis, Utah State
Sheena Shaw, Southern Utah
(Next in line- Ashley Sharpe, Southern Utah)

Northeast Region

Seeded teams:

#9 Michigan
#16 Penn State

Unseeded teams currently in position to qualify for Regionals:

#32 New Hampshire
#40 Pittsburgh
#51 Rutgers

Next in line:

#58 Yale
#59 Cornell

Again this week, this region appears nearly set for the postseason.  The only question is whether Penn State can hang on to seeded position.

New Hampshire (193.11), Pittsburgh (192.28), and Rutgers (190.885) are out of contention for seeded position, and there is no one behind them in the Northeast Region who can catch them.  The nearest competitor, Yale (188.47), is about two and a half points behind.

As things stand now, the following would be the individual qualifiers to Regionals:

All-Around-

Kelly Gurney, Rhode Island U.
Alina Liao, Yale
Emily Petkun, Pennsylvania
Kimberly So, Yale
Emily Rinaldo, Rhode Island U.
(Next in line- Julia Zimmerman, MIT)

South Central Region

Seeded teams:

#6 Oklahoma
#11 Nebraska
#12 Arizona State
#13 Missouri
#15 Arizona

Unseeded teams currently in position to qualify to Regionals:

#20 Arkansas
#24 Illinois-Champaign
#37 Illinois-Chicago

Next in line:

#45 Northern Illinois
#48 Southeast Missouri

This region still boasts a remarkable five teams in seeded position in Oklahoma, Nebraska, Arizona State, Missouri, and Arizona.  In addition, Arkansas (194.705) will be fighting to the wire to pull up into the top 18.

Illinois-Champaign (194.06) and Illinois-Chicago (192.745) appear securely in position for unseeded berths.  The best chance Northern Illinois (192.065), Southeast Missouri (191.59), and #50 Texas Woman’s (191.315) have to qualify to Regionals is to cheer on Arkansas in its fight to become seeded.

As things stand now, the following would be the individual qualifiers to Regionals:

All-Around-

Sandra Blake, Southeast Missouri
Brystol Powelski, Southeast Missouri
Alison Ezell, Southeast Missouri
Danyelle Aber, Southeast Missouri
Cheryl Berezan, Illinois State
(These are the only five gymnasts from this region with all-around RQS who are not on a qualifying team.)

Vault-

Meaghan Koshman, Illinois State

Uneven Bars-

Courtney Arno, Texas Woman’s

Balance Beam-

Jennifer Naughton, Northern Illinois

Floor Exercise-

Southeast Region

Seeded teams:

#1 Georgia
#3 Florida

Unseeded teams currently in position to qualify to Regionals:

#22 West Virginia
#25 North Carolina
#30 North Carolina State

Next in line:

#39 Maryland
#41 Towson

The Southeast Region appears to be set for the postseason.  Georgia and Florida are locks for seeded berths.  Of the currently unseeded teams, only West Virginia (194.5) has an outside shot at becoming seeded.  North Carolina (193.985) and North Carolina State (193.245) are well ahead of Maryland (192.37), Towson (192.24), and #42 George Washington (192.18).

As things stand now, the following would be the individual qualifiers to Regionals:

All-Around-

Christina Ghani, Towson
Rachel Martinez, Maryland
Rachel Colon, Maryland
Erin Aiken, George Washington
Decelia Willacy, Towson
(Next in line- Tricia Long, William and Mary)

Vault-

Angela Ferg, Maryland

Uneven Bars-

Cristina Lindo, Towson

Balance Beam-

Alex Gatch, Maryland

Floor Exercise-

Jess Guilbert, George Washington

West Region

Seeded teams:

#7 Stanford
#10 UCLA
#17 Oregon State

Unseeded teams currently in position to qualify to Regionals:

#28 Boise State
#29 Sacramento State
#31 San Jose State

Next in line:

#36 Washington
#47 California

Stanford and UCLA remain secure in their seeded positions, while Oregon State will need to fight it out until the end to retain theirs.

Meanwhile, Boise State (193.455) replaced a 188 with a 194 to jump over three teams and take the lead in the war for West Region unseeded berths.  Boise State, along with Sacramento State (193.345), San Jose State (193.2), and Washington (192.81) are all very much within striking range of one another.

In the best case scenario, three of the four teams will make Regionals.  In the worst scenario, Oregon State will fall out of the top 18, and only two of the four will make it.  Interestingly, all four of these teams have two away meets remaining.

As things stand now, the following would the individual qualifiers to Regionals:

All-Around-

Jessica Kelley, California
Jessica Portlock, Alaska
Chelsea Bakken, Washington
Britani Pittullo, California
Sarah Sullivan, Seattle-Pacific
(Next in line- Lauren Agostino, Alaska)

Vault-

Ashley Houghting, Washington

Uneven Bars-

Kelly McDonald, Washington

Balance Beam-
