Cal Men's Coach Weiner Retires

Cal Men's Head Coach Barry Weiner has retired, the school has announced.  Weiner retires after 19 years at the helm at Cal.   His retirement comes amidst reports that Cal boosters and alumni are mobilizing in face of the threat of the entire Cal gymnastics program, due to the ongoing California budget crisis.

Utah Moves to the Pac-10

Utah has officially accepted an invitation to join the Pac-10 Conference, further strengthening an already strong gymnastics conference.  They currently compete as part of the WAC, which does not sponsor a conference championship.  Eight teams currently now support the Women's sport in the Pac-10.  Utah will begin Pac-10 competition for the 2011-2012 school year.

Colorado had previously announced it's intention to join the Pac-10 after NU moved from the Big 12 to the Big 10.  Shortly thereafter, Boise State moved to the MWC.  This all started a chain reaction of negotiations between schools, conferences (Big 10, Pac 10, and Big 12) and television networks.   In the end, the remaining schools in the Big 12 decided to stay together as a conference after a new television deal was assembled that satisfied Texas.  Some pundits speculated that the major sports television networks had a vested interest in preventing the spread of mega-conferences, each with their own television channels.

However, there is speculation that although the activity has settled down, it is not yet completed.  Some schools, and more importnatly, boosters are still seeking out the best options for their schools.

2010 Superlatives

Skills of Note in the 2010 Season (W)

The following is a listing of high level skills performed by Women in the 2010 Season.  To make this list, the skill had to be successfully competed in a meet sometime during the season.  The skill competed must have an FIG rating of "E" or "F" or "G", or an FIG Vault Difficult Value of 5.3 or higher.

The issue of escalating difficult leading to higher injury rates and more wear and tear on the athlete is important.  The purpose of this list is not to encourage or foster unreasonable risk or other threats to the safety of the athletes.  In fact, many of the skills on this list were only competed in special circumstances.  This list simply serves as an archive and collection of skills actually performed by the athletes.

This list is incomplete and will be updated as information becomes available.  Please submit your additions and corrections to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

In Women's NCAA gymnastics, each new season brings a fresh set of athletes and a fresh set of rules. (For those unfamiliar with the terminology, the NCAA code modifications are the set of rules that govern scoring in the sport.) As sure as brightly colored leaves are a sign of Fall, so is the appearance of a fresh set of code modifications!

For the past several seasons, we have made an assessment of each incoming recruiting class and have provided a ranking. This year, the task proved to be especially tough. Today, there is much greater access to information on the athletes, their skill level, level of polish, and of course, their accomplishments, so we cannot rank an athlete merely on her resume alone.   The athletes’ college choices also reflect increased parity, making the job of ranking the Top 10 Recruiting Classes quite difficult.

UGA Tops Women's Preseason Poll

Georgia tops the Women's Preseason Coaches Poll, pulling down 13 first place votes.  Utah was 2nd, with six first place votes.  Bama was third, but 8 voters rated them #1.  Florida, in 4th, and UCLA, in 5th, each pulled down two first place votes.  LSU, Stanford, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Oregon State made up places 6 through 10.  For the rest of the Top 25, keep on reading...
