Olympics: Men's Qualifying Results

China used big scores on PH and Rings to edge the US 270.461 to 270.405 in qualifying for the Team Finals at the Olympic Games in Rio.   Russia is close behind at 269.512, Japan at 269.294, GBR at 268.67, and Brazil at 268.078.  The Ukraine and Germany also made the finals.  The finals should be a tight race for the medals, with the fewest mistakes likely to determine the winner in the 3 up, 3 count format.

Former Michigan star and NCAA champion Sam Mikulak was 7th AA in the prelims, after struggling on PH.  Teammate Chris Brooks, another Sooner, also struggled on PH but qualified to the AA final in 19th place.  Mikulak posted the top score of the day on FX to lead qualifiers to the final, and also made the HB final with his modified routine (no Cassina).  Former OU Sooner Alex Naddour qualified for the PH final, while another former Sooner, Jake Dalton, made the FX final (in 2nd).  The USA's Danell Leyva, originally the alternate, made finals on PB and HB.

Among others with NCAA ties, no others made finals.  Ex Ohio State standout Mikhail Koudinov of New Zealand placed 45th AA, while Cal's Ryan Patters (RSA) was 46th.  Incoming Stanford frosh David Jessen (son of Hana Ricna) was just behind in 47th.

France's Samir Ait Said suffered a devastating leg injury on vault, after qualifying to the Ring final.  We advise you to avoid any video replays of the horrific injury.   We wish him (and Germany's Andreas Toba, who also did not finish the competition but still did PH after seriously injuring his knee on FX) a successful recovery.
