In a sad decision, Iowa State announced a decision to terminate its gymnastics team. They will replace it with another sport with at least equal participation opportunities. The team had its season cancelled, due to what the administration said was irreconcilable differences between athletes, coaches and parents. The team debuted in the 1973-1974 season and had a long history of success, including NCAA National appearances under former Head Coach KJ Kindler. The language and actions surrounding the announcement of the season cancellation caused worry among many observers that the program was up for termination. Like other schools, Iowa State had been facing severe financial distress under the new NCAA era and could potentially save money by replacing gymnastics with a sport with lower expenses or higher participation numbers. Those concerns proved to be valid.
The existing gymnasts will have a right to transfer or have their scholarships honored --- however they may face a difficult decision of staying at Iowa State or seeking a scholarship or walk-on position elsewhere. The 2026-2027 recruits will also have their scholarships honored, but will be in a similar situation. The 2027-2028 commits will be restarting their recruiting journeys.

We are heading into our final weeks of the regular season, as Top 16 seedings, non "play in" positions (Top 28) and spots at Regionals (Top 36) are up for grabs. As a reminder the rankings are based on the new National Qualifying System formula whereby the five lowest home scores are selected and combined with the away scores, the high and low discarded, the remaining averaged. Because of the increasing number of meets, the impact of any individual meet means upward movement can be muted by the simple math of an increasing denominator But a low scoring meet (especially at home after five meets), can also cause changes, as we saw this past weekend. OU remains #1, but LSU at #2 closed the gap this weekend after two meets. Bama at #3 and Florida at #4 remain in the same places, and are tightly clustered together. UCLA at #5 lost a bit of ground to #6 UGA. Here are this week's rankings, as compiled by RoadtoNationals.
