Newcomers (5):  Olivia Buckner, Taylor DeVries, Sophia Esposito, Mia Heather, Sage Thompson (Jr/TR/Utah)

Quick Assessment:   Oregon State comes in #13 in the Coaches' Preseason Rankings, down one spot from their finish in 2023.  They return 19 of 24 routines from their last starting lineup, when they placed 0.1 behind 2nd place LSU at the super-close Denver Regional.  Foremost among the losses is Madi Dagen, a former AAer and top performer on VT (Yurchenko 1 1/2), BB and FX.  They also lost Jenna Domingo, a key BB performer and Kristina Peterson, who provided depth on three events, but especially on BB.  Bird was a former AAer as well.  However, the Beavers return 11 starters, led by superstar Jade Carey.  Carey, now a junior, will continue to train for the Olympics while competing for the Beavers.  We may see her limit her competition schedule on VT and FX, this season.  The Beavers also welcome the return or Sydney Gonzales and Lauren Letzsch.  Gonzales, a senior, competed on three events last season but adds an important 10.0 start value (SV) vault to the Beaver vault lineup.  Letzsch excels on BB and FX, but competed on three events last season as well.  Sophomore Savannah Miller competed on FX and UB last season, while classmates Jennifer McMillan, Ellie Weaver and Francesca Caso provided a much needed boost on Oregon State's weakest event, the UB.  This season, we'll see if any of the sophomores step up further, which is not uncommon in the NCAA as frosh sometimes take a season to adjust.  McMillan and Weaver in particular as well as junior Natalie Briones have the potential to contribute even more.  Another junior, Kaitlin Garcia showed an upgraded Yurchenko 1 1/2 at the recent Orange and Black exhibition.  The Beavers also look forward to the return of Phoebe Jakubczyk.  She was set to be a key contributor last season until an injury ended her season.  She competed regularly on UB and BB as a frosh.

Oregon State welcomes a talented class of four frosh and Utah transfer Sage Thompson, a junior.  Thompson was a standout on UB for the Utes, posting a 10 last season.  The past several seasons, the UB was the Beavers Achilles' heel.  Last year marked an improvement, although consistency still suffered at times.  Thompson is an end-of-the lineup option for Oregon State, and could also contribute on other events, like VT.  Top frosh Sophia Esposito has been tagged as a Newcomer to Watch in the Pac 12.  A two-time L10 National Team member from New Image, she was the Sr. F AA Champ at the 2023 Women's Development Program L10 Nationals.  She also won BB, placed 3rd on VT and 6th on FX.  In 2022, she tied for 8th on BB and FX while tying for 11th AA at the WDP L10 Nationals.  She was also a L10 National Champ on VT, where she has competed a Yurchenko double twist in the past.  Oregon State also adds Olivia Buckner, a L10 from Olympus.  She tied for 5th AA at the 2023 WDP L10 Nationals.  She also tied for 3rd on FX and placed 8th on VT (Yurchenko 1 1/2 in the past).  In 2022, she placed 4th on VT at the WDP L10 Nationals and won Region 1 Regional titles in the AA, VT, UB and FX.  The third signee, Taylor DeVries, is a L10 from Legacy Elite.  She tied for 9th on UB and FX (triple full) and 11th AA at the 2023 WDP L10 Nationals.  She also tied for 6th on UB and placed 10th AA at the 2022 L10 Nationals.  The final frosh, Mia Heather, is a L10 from San Mateo who has been limited by injuries the past several seasons.

Oregon State looks to improve on their finish last season and challenge for a spot at Nationals once again.  Despite some major losses, the Beavers have a very talented set of newcomers that should be able to address the pieces lost from last season.  In fact, if the frosh are able to adapt quickly to college competition, we could see the Beavers grow even stronger than in 2023.

 14.  Ohio State Buckeyes

Official Web Site:  Link      Schedule      Roster
Head Coach:  Meredith Paulicivic
Associate Head Coach:  Lucas Wasson
Assistants:  Randy Monahan, Mickayla Stuckey
Starting Routines Returning: 16/24
Routines Missing:  3 VT, 2 UB, 1 BB, 2 FX
Finish Last Season:  13th
Returning Starters (6):   Alexis Hankins (5th Yr), Payton Harris (So), Ella Hodges (Gr), Emma Pritchard (Sr), Nicole Riccardi (Sr), Tory Vetter (RS So)
Other/Injured Returners (5):  Savannah Gonzalez (Sr), Mallory Gregory (So), Kaitlyn Grimes (Jr), Kaylyn Mintz (So), Jojo Warga (Sr)
Graduated (5):  Elexis Edwards, Claire Gagliardi, Sydney Jennings, Raina Malas, Colby Miller
Other Losses (5):  Stephanie Berger (Jr/R), Ellie Binger (Fr/?), Jenna Hlavach (Jr/R), Hannah Oliveros (Sr/?), Maddy Pike (Jr/R),
Newcomers (6):  Samara Buchanan, Mary Green, Courtney McCann, Maisyn Rader, Grace Walker, Sidney Washington (Jr/TR/Pitt)

Quick Assessment:  Ohio State had one of their best finishes in years in placed 13th in the Final rankings.  They also finished 3rd at the Norman Regional, just 0.1 behind Kentucky and 0.3 behind OU.  They slot in this preseason at #14, after saying goodbye to 8 routines from their last starting lineups.  Among those routines were some high scoring sets from Elexis Edwards, Claire Gagliardi Sydney Jennings and Colby Miller.  Edwards became an All-American on FX last season, after winning the Regional FX title.  She also contributed on VT and UB.  Gagliardi was a key FX specialist for the Buckeyes, tying her career of 9.95 twice in 2023.  Sydney Jennings was a key contributor on VT and BB while Colby Miller was an UB ace, and the 2022 Big Ten champion.  The Ohio State also had a number of retirements or departures over the last year, including many potential standouts.  They still feature a strong returning core, led by senior Nicole Riccardi and sophomores Payton Harris and Tory Vetter.  Harris was a standout as frosh, competing AA in every meet and qualifying to Nationals as an individual.  She posted a season high of 39.625 at the Regional Final.  Vetter competed her first full season in 2023.  The redshirt sophomore competed on up to four events and won two beam titles during the season.  Riccardi competed on up to three events last season, but excelled on UB, tying her career high of 9.95 twice during the season.  Alexis Hankins, a fifth year, competed primarily on BB and UB last season but has competed AA in the past.  Grad student Ella Hodges was another standout for the Buckeyes on BB and FX last season, winning a total of five event titles.  She's also competed AA in the past.

The Buckeyes welcome five frosh and a strong transfer to bolster the squad in 2024.  Junior Sidney Washington was a top AA competitor for Pitt as a frosh, winning All-EAGL first team honors.  In 2023, she earned career highs on VT (9.9), UB (9.9), BB (9.875) and FX (9.95).  Her experience could provide an immediate boost, especially on VT.  Frosh Samara Buchanan is a L10 from American Twisters.  She tied for 5th on BB and placed 45th AA at the 2023 Women's Development Program (WDP) L10 Nationals.  She also placed 8th on VT and tied for 33rd AA at the 2021 WDP L10 Nationals.  Courtney McCann is a L10 from WOGA.  In 2022, she tied for 4th on FX and placed 6th on BB en route to a 13th place AA finish at the 2022 WDP L10 Nationals.  In 2023, she won the Metroplex Challenge with a big 38.85 AA, taking VT, BB and the FX in her session.  However, she did not compete in the post-season.  Maisyn Rader is a L10 from the Connecticut Gymnastics Academy.  In 2023, she tied for 9th on UB and 23rd AA at the WDP L10 Nationals.  She also placed 10th on UB and 30th AA at the 2022 WDP L10 Nationals.  Mary Green, is an in-state L10 from FLYTZ.  In 2022, she tied for 8th on FX and placed 42nd AA at the WDP L10 Nationals.  She competed sparingly in 2023.  Finally, Grace Walker is an in-state L10 from Integrity.  In 2023, she placed 27th AA at the WDP L10 Nationals.  In 2022, qualifying to L10 Nationals as an Individual Event Specialist on BB, she placed 1st in her session.

The Ohio State enters 2024 looking to return to the form that brought them oh-so-close to a spot at Nationals.  To do that, they have some spots to fill from their departed stars.  They'll also need some step-up performances from their other returners and for their frosh to adapt quickly to the rigors of NCAA competition.  Transfer Washington could be a key hinge factor, while all five of their other returners have lineup experience in the past.

 15.  Arkansas Razorbacks

Official Web Site:  Link      Schedule      Roster
Starting Routines Returning: 18/24
Routines Gone:  1 VT, 1 UB, 2 BB, 2 FX
Head Coach: Jordyn Wieber
Assistants: Chris Brooks, Kyla Ross, Kyla Bryant
Finish Last Season:  17th
Returning Starters (11):  Reese Drotar (So), Kalyxta Gamiao (Jr), Maddie Jones (Jr), Jaime Pratt (So), Frankie Price (RS So), Jensen Scalzo (Sr), Makenzie Sedlacek (Jr), Leah Smith (Jr), Cally Swaney (So), Cami Weaver (RS So), Lauren Williams (So)
Other/Injured Returners (1):  Emma Kelley (Sr)
Graduated (5):  Kiara Gianfagna, Kennedy Hambrick, Madison Hickey, Bailey Lovett, Norah Flatley
Other Losses (0):  N/A
Newcomers (5):  Chandler Buntin, Dakota Essenpries, Hailey Klein, Serena Linton (Gr/TR/Arizona) Priscilla Park

Quick Assessment:  Arkansas slots into #15 in the preseason poll, up two from their #17 finish last season.  They lost some big names from last year, led by superstar transfer Norah Flatley.  Flatley posted a season-high of 39.75 and secured All-American honors on BB in her one season with the GymBacks.  She also had highs of 9.975 on UB, BB and FX, and 9.9 on VT.  Arkansas also said goodbye to Kennedy Hambrick, who competed primarily on BB last season, unfortunately.  In her prior four seasons, she secured five All-American honors and was a major force in the AA.  Also lost to graduation is Kiara Giafagna, a one-time AAer and solid depth performer and Madison Hickey, a specialist on VT and FX.  Arkansas also lost Bailey Lovett during the season last year, as the demands of law schools proved too much to balance with gymnastics.  Despite those losses, Arkansas is looking to replace just six routines from their final lineups in 2023.  They return 11 athletes from their starting lineups, with plenty of depth across the events.  Sophomore Lauren Williams made a big impact in 2023 in her debut, bringing her Yurchenko 1 1/2 and full-in on FX.  She also qualified to the NCAA championships on VT.  Classmate Cally Swaney was a regular on UB and BB, setting career highs of 9.875 and 9.925, respectively.  Sophomore Jaime Pratt competed on UB last season, but is capable of a bigger impact.  Redshirt sophomore Frankie Price rebounded from injury her rookie year to excel on VT and FX.  With another year of recovery, she could be even stronger.  Likewise, redshirt sophomore Cami Weaver returned from injury her frosh season to compete VT and BB last season.  Junior Leah Smith has competed in the AA in the past but primarily competed on VT and FX last season.  Another junior, Maddie Jones, has competed primarily on UB and FX while classmate Kalyxta Gamiao has competed primarily on BB and FX, but also trains VT.  Junior Makenzie Sedlacek competed primarily on VT (Yurchenko 1 1/2) last season but has competed on all four events in the past.

Arkansas welcomes four frosh newcomers and grad transfer Serena Linton.  Linton was an individual NCAA qualifier on BB and a second team All American in 2022.  She's competed on up to three events in the past but is strongest on BB and UB.  Priscilla Park, a three-time L10 National Team member from Georgia Elite, leads the frosh.  In 2023, she placed 2nd on UB and BB and 3rd AA at the Women's Development Program (WDP) L10 Nationals.  She was the L10 National AA Champ in Senior C in 2022 and was the uneven bar co-champion.  She also tied for 3rd on FX and placed 9th on VT.  As evidenced by the GymBack's recent intrasquad and a history of top L10 National finishes (4x at 6th or higher), she'll be challenging for an AA spot immediately.  Arkansas also welcomes former senior elite and L10 Hailey Klein, from Legacy Elite.  She placed 8th AA at the 2021 GK Classic.  She missed most of 2022 but returned to L10 in 2023.  However, she did not compete in the post-season.  The GymBacks also welcome Chandler Buntin, a L10 from ConXion.  A two-time L10 National qualifier, she tied for 5th on BB and 38th AA at the 2023 WDP L10 Nationals.  The fourth frosh, Dakota Essenpries is a L10 from Missouri Elite.  Another two-time L10 National qualifier, she tied for 2nd on VT (Yurchenko 1 1/2) and placed 31st AA at the 2023 WDP L10 Nationals.

Although Arkansas has experienced a large number of departures, they return the plurality of their lineups for 2024.  They will look to put all the pieces together in 2024 and challenge for a spot in the Regional Final.  Once there, anything is possible.  Despite a potential standout in Park, they will still need the returners to step-up and continue their improvement trend into 2024.  As long as health continues to favor the squad, there is plenty of upside.

 16.  UGA Gym Dogs

Official Web Site:  Link      Schedule      Roster
Starting Routines Returning: 16/24
Routines Gone:  2 VT, 1 UB, 3 BB, 2 FX
Head Coach: Courtney Kupets Carter
Assistants: Ryan Roberts, Sam Wellbourn, Mollie Korth
Finish Last Season:  20th
Returning Starters (6):  Amanda Cashman (Gr), Katie Finnegan (Sr), Naya Howard (So), Haley de Jong (Gr), JaFree Scott (So), Eryn Williams (So)
Other/Injured Returners (3):  Vanessa Deniz (5th Yr/I), Sidney Fitzgerald (So), Nicole King (So)
Graduated (3):  Josie Angeny, Loulie Hattaway, Sandra Elsadek
Other Losses (6):  Sarah Cohen (Jr/?), Madelynn Crow (So/TR/AU), Maeve Hahn (Jr/?), Soraya Hawthorne (5th Yr/TR/OU), Jacquie Moran (So/R), Ariel Posen (So/R)
Newcomers (9):  Jaydah Battle, Ashlyn LaClair (Gr/TR/UK), Kelsey Lee, Zora Morgan, Heather Parker, Lily Smith, Holly Snyder, Anya Turner, Ady Wahl

Quick Assessment:   UGA slots in 16th in the preseason Coaches' poll, after finishing 20th in the final rankings last season.  This likely reflects the strength of their incoming classes, despite the loss of 8 (to 12) routines from 2023.  Nine gymnasts are gone from last year's roster, many of whom had struggled with injury.  Josie Angeny completed her college eligibility at UGA, having competed in up to three events for the Gym Dogs.  Also exhausting her eligibility is Sandra Elsadek, who is now competing elite for Egypt.  She competed on VT and FX.  Also departed is Soraya Hawthorne, who is using her extra year at OU.  She was a standout on up to three events for Georgia.  UGA welcomes six returning starters, led by grad students Amanda Cashman and Haley De Jong, senior Katie Finnegan and sophomores Naya Howard and JaFree Scott.  De Jong was a top AAer for UGA last season and was named the Team MVP, setting a career in the AA with a 39.45.  Howard was another AAer for the Gym Dogs, hitting a season high of 39.475.  She posted scores of 9.9 or higher on all four events and had a strong fall training.  However, she sat out the Georgia First Look meet but has resumed training.  Grad student Cashman was a regular contributor on up to three events for UGA last season while senior Finnegan has competed on up to three events, with her strongest being UB.  Sophomore Scott also returns and looks strong in preseason training.  She excels on UB with a high of 9.95 but also received SEC All-Freshman honors on BB.  Unfortunately, 5th Vanessa Deniz suffered a knee injury in December.  She was a regular on BB but also competed on UB and FX at OU.

Georgia welcomes a huge class of newcomers that will be asked upon to make a big impact in 2024.  It includes 8 frosh and one transfer.   Holly Snyder is a L10 from Docksider's who placed 2nd AA at UGA's First Look meet in early December.  She placed 4th AA at the 2023 WDP L10 Nationals, including 5th on UB and tying for 5th on FX.  She also placed 3rd on UB, 5th on FX, 8th on VT and tied for 5th AA at the 2022 WDP L10 Nationals.  Another standout at the First Look meet, Jaydah Battle is a L10 from World Class.  In 2023, she won the L10 National Title on VT (Sr. D, Yurchenko 1 1/2) at the Women's Development Program (WDP) L10 Nationals.  She also was runner-up on BB, tied for 7th on FX and placed 5th AA.  In 2022, she also was a runner-up on BB, placed 3rd on VT, 5th on FX and 6th AA at the WDP L10 Nationals.  She also won the BB title at the 2021 WDP L10 Nationals.  Lily Smith, who originally committed to Bama, is a two-time L10 National Team member from Silvia's.  Known for her grace and extension, she tied for 2nd on UB, 3rd on FX and placed 7th AA at the 2023 WDP L10 Nationals.   In 2022, she won National Titles on UB, FX and the AA at the WDP L10 Nationals.  She also placed 4th on BB and tied for 8th on VT.  Holly Parker a L10 from ETC, did not compete at the First Look meet.  She tied for 9th on VT and 23rd AA at the 2023 WDP L10 Nationals.  She also won VT in her session at the 2022 L10 Nationals, competing as an individual event specialist.  Ady Wahl, a L10 from Zanesville, is another top vaulter with a Yurchenko 1 1/2.  She was runner-up on VT in the Sr. E division at the WDP L10 Nationals in 2023.  She also tied for 8th on UB and placed 16th AA.  She tied for 5th AA in 2022, tying for 2nd on VT and placing 9th on UB and 10th on FX.  UGA also welcomes frosh Kelsey Lee, Zora Morgan and Anya Turner.  Lee is a three-time L10 Regional qualifier from Lakewood Ranch.  She won UB and was runner-up on VT at the 2023 Florida L10 state meet.  Morgan, a L10 from Orlando Metro, had an exceptional year in 2023, winning the National title on BB in the Sr. E division at the WDP L10 Nationals.  Finally, transfer Ashlyn LaClair competed VT and FX at Kentucky, and could provide a key VT for the Gym Dogs.

Georgia returns a strong returning core of gymnasts, but injuries have hit hard during December.  They will need their 9 newcomers to contribute immediately and fill out some key lineup spots, as evidenced by the First Look meet.  There is certainly talent in the incoming class and in the returning core, but it may mean that UGA will only grow stronger through the course of the season as the newcomers adapt to college competition.

 17.  Auburn Tigers

Official Web Site:  Link      Schedule      Roster
Head Coach: Jeff Graba
Associate Head Coach:  Sara Carver-Milne
Assistants: Kurt Hettinger, Brooke Leonard-Fincher
Starting Routines Returning: 21/24
Routines Gone:  1 VT, 1 UB, 0 BB, 1 FX
Finish Last Season:  24th
Returning Starters (8):  Aria Brusch (Gr), Sophia Groth (Jr), Hannah Haigle (So), Olivia Hollingsworth (Sr), Sara Hubbard (Jr), Caroline Leonard (Jr), Gabby McLaughlin (Sr), Cassie Stevens (Gr)
Other/Injured Returners (3):  Ananda Brown (Jr), Olivia Greaves (RS Fr/I), Hailey John (So)
Graduated (5):   Derrian Gobourne, Morgan Leigh Oldham, Adeline Sabados , Piper Smith, Anna Sumner
Other Losses (1): Sunisa Lee (Jr/Returning to elite)
Newcomers (10):  Bryn Bartman, Emma Grace Boyd, Madelynn Crow (So/TR/UGA/I), Sophia Greaves, Anna Hill (Jr/TR/Temple), Julianne Huff, Sydney Schumaker (Sr/TR/SUNY Brockport), Lila Smith (Jr/TR/Kentucky), Jersie Woolsey, Paige Zancan

Quick Assessment:  Auburn had a disappointing finish to last season, losing superstar Suni Lee to a medical issue and suffering numerous issues on UB during the Regional semi-final.  They enter the season as #17, despite their 24th place finish last season.  Besides Lee, the Tigers are missing superstar Derrian Gobourne, a former National champ on VT and a two-time runner-up (UB, FX).  The seven-time All American (4 regular season, 3 NCAA) was a dependable end of the lineup performer for AU.  However, AU returns 21 of 24 routines from that final starting lineup, and 8 key starters.  They will be led by grad students Aria Brusch and Cassie Stevens, senior Olivia Hollingsworth and Gabby McLaughlin and junior Sophia Groth.  Groth, Hollingsworth and Stevens were all AAers last season for AU.  Groth had a stellar season as a frosh, hitting a 39.7 in the AA and taking 2nd team All-American honors on the BB.  Hollingsworth set a new career high in the AA last season, posting a 39.5.  She looks stronger than ever in the preseason and looks prepared to continue the momentum into 2024.  Stevens has spent the last four seasons as one of AU's most stable and consistent AAers.  Stevens also won the SEC title on VT for her Yurchenko 1 1/2 in 2023.  She'll be key once again and looks to be in excellent form.  Brusch was a solid contributor on three events for the Tigers last season and received All-SEC honors on the UB.  Senior Gabby McLaughlin has competed on all four events during her career but excels on BB, where her toe point, flexibility and grace set her apart.  The Tigers could also see expanded roles from sophomore Hannah Haigle and junior Caroline Leonard.  Junior Sara Hubbard will also bring a key VT and a solid FX.  Unfortunately, redshirt frosh and former elite Olivia Greaves is injured and won't be back until later in the season.

Auburn welcomes 10 newcomers, including four transfers and six frosh.  They look to elevate and strengthen the Auburn lineups and propel the squad back to the Regional Finals.  Julianne Huff, a two-time L10 National Team member, is the standout recruit and could make an immediate impact on the Tiger lineups.  The L10 from JamJev tied for 3rd on FX and placed 13th AA at the 2023 Women's Development Program (WDP) L10 Nationals.  She also placed 2nd AA, 2nd on VT and tied for 2nd on FX and 6th on UB at the 2022 WDP L10 Nationals.  Also seeking to break through is Bryn Bartman, who trained elite at Georgia Elite.  She's a two-time L10 National qualifier who is strongest on UB and BB.  The Tigers also welcome Paige Zancan, a L10 from Hill's.  She tied for 3rd on BB and placed 33rd AA at the 2023 WDP L10 Nationals.  She also tied for 13th AA at the 2022 WDP L10 Nationals.  Completing the class are Emma Grace Boyd, Sophia Greaves and Jersie Woolsey.  Boyd is a two-time L10 National qualifier from Orlando Metro who came back strongly in 2023 after missing the 2022 season.  She tied for 7th on BB and 35th AA at the 2023 WDP L10 Nationals.  Greaves qualified to the 2022 WDP L10 Nationals but competed mostly on UB and BB last season.  The final frosh, Woolsey is a two-time L10 Regional qualifier from Black Diamond.

Four transfers also seek to make an impact:  Madelynn Crow, Anna Hill, Sydney Schumaker and Lila Smith.  Schumaker was a two-time NCGA (Div 3) All American on VT.  She was also runner-up on VT in 2023 at the NCGA Nationals, and vaults a tuck Yurchenko 1 1/2.  Junior Hill transferred to AU from Temple, where she hit career highs of 9.9 on both VT and FX.  She was also named to the All EAGL First Team on VT.  Crow did not compete as a frosh for UGA but was a L10 National qualifier in 2022.  Hill, like Crow, trained at Georgia Elite and was a L10 National qualifier.  She did not compete for UK.

Auburn seeks to return to the Regional Final in 2024 and turn the page from last season's shaky Regional performance and the loss of superstars Lee and Gobourne.  They do return a strong core of experienced gymnasts, led by Groth, Hollingsworth and Stevens.  They will need all three at their peak for the team to continue their success, along with the continued development of standout frosh Huff.

Quick Assessment:   Minnesota enters the season looking to replace 8 routines from the final lineup in 2023, when they finished 18th, having finished 0.25 behind Denver in the Regional Semi-Final.  They say goodbye to 8 graduates, including stars Maddie Quarles, Halle Remllnger and Tiarre Sales.  Quarles was former second team All-American on VT, her specialty.  Remlinger was a key gymnast on three events for the Gophers, but especially on FX, where she posted a 10 last season.  Salles, a former All Big 10 performer competed primarily on UB and BB after competing on all four events earlier in her career.  Leading the 7 returning starters from 2023 are seniors Gianna Gerdes and Mya Hooten.  Gerdes competed AA for Minnesota last season and was named to the All Big Ten first team.  She posted a 39.5 in the AA last season.  Hooten is an eight time All-American (4 regular season, 4 NCAA) with career highs of 9.95 or better on VT, UB and FX.  On FX, she's hit a 10 in every season of competition.  She competed AA with a high of 39.675 last season; with more consistency on BB she could be a regular force in the AA.  Minnesota also welcomes back junior Marissa Jencks and sophomores Seria Johnson and Sarah Moraw.  Jencks competed on up to three events for the Gophers last season but was the top finisher in the AA at the recent public Gopher Intrasquad.  Johnson competed at times in the AA last season, hitting a high of 39.35.  Her strongest events are UB and FX.  Moraw competed on up to three events for Minnesota last season but excels on BB.  The Gophers also return senior Emily Koch, who has competed on up to three events in the past.  Minnesota also welcomes the return of Brooklyn Rowray.  The sophomore looks to make a bigger impact this season but excels in particular on BB.

Minnesota welcomes 7 frosh, their largest class in history, plus one transfer for 2024. Jordyn Lyden, a L10 from Flips is coming off a strong club season that saw her finish 3rd on BB, tie for 5th on UB and place 8th AA at the 2023 Women's Development Program (WDP) L10 Nationals.  The signee also placed 25th AA at the 2022 WDP L10 Nationals.  Jenna Olshefski is a L10 from Universal.  Another signee, she placed 4th on VT and tied for 4th on BB and 5th on FX enroute to a 17th place AA finish at the 2023 WDP L10 Nationals.  She was also 2nd on FX, 3rd on VT (Yurchenko 1 1/2 in '22) and 6th AA at the 2021 WDP L10 Nationals.   Marisa Fisher is a L10 from Phenom.  The signee tied for 6th on UB and placed 33rd AA at the 2023 WDP L10 Nationals.  Sophia Nguyen is a L10 from Legacy.  She tied for 26th AA at the 2023 WDP L10 Nationals and placed 23rd AA at the 2022 WDP L10 Nationals.  She was also one of the few AAers during the public Gopher Intrasquad.  Kendall Landry is a L10 from WOGA.  She tied for 35th AA at the 2023 WDP L10 Nationals.  She also tied for 4th on UB and placed 15th AA at the 2022 WDP L10 Nationals.  Fellow frosh Sophie Swartzmiller is a L10 from Salto who did not compete in 2022.  She placed 31st AA at the 2022 WDP L10 Nationals.  The final frosh, Leah Gonsiorowski, is a L10 from Lake City Twisters.  She placed 26th AA at the 2023 WDP L10 Nationals.  Transfer Anahit Assadourian did not compete in her first season at Pitt.

Minnesota enters the 2024 season with a strong core of returners and a large set of newcomers.  They have 8 routines to replace in 2024, especially some key high scoring sets on VT, FX and UB.  Vault, one of the Gopher's strengths last season, is now a bit of a question mark due to the loss of the strong vaulters.  Beam was also a problematic event for the squad last season (they ended the year #40 in the final regular season rankings) but with gymnasts like Rowray returning and a large roster, that event should improve.  With so much parity in the NCAA, the Gophers will need to work hard to close the gap on those two events.

Routines Gone:  1 VT, 0 UB, 0 BB, 1 FX
Finish Last Season:  15th
Returning Starters (10): Sarah Clark (Sr), Skye Harper (Sr), Kayla Lee (So), Jada Mangahas (Sr), Gracie Reeves (Gr), Cienna Samiley (Sr), Hannah Scharf (Gr), Anaya Smith (Sr/I), Alex Theodorou (Jr), Emily White (Sr)
Other/Injured Returners (6):  Cassi Barbanente (Sr), McClaine Daigle (So), Isabella Kowan (So), Caroline Lichtman (So), Mallory Marcheli (Jr), Kimberly Smith (So)
Graduated (2):  Jordan Jaslow, Isabel Redmond
Other Losses (1): Juliette Boyer (Gr/I/TR/USU)
Newcomers (4):   Halle Gregoire, Lilia Purler, Chloe Seaga, Chavala Shepard

Quick Assessment:   ASU enters the 2024 season having lost just two routines from a squad that made the Regional Finals last season and finished 15th.  They took 4th in the Pittsburgh Regional final, 0.325 behind 2nd place Florida.  They are slotted 19th in the Preseason Rankings, which seems low relative to their light graduation losses and both post-season and regular season final rank (#15).  Jordan Jaslow was the only starter (VT/FX) not returning.  They return 10 experienced starters, filled with seniors and 5th Yr/Grad students.  The Gym Devils will be led in 2024 by grad students Gracie Reeves and Hannah Scharf, seniors Sarah Clark, Jada Mangahas and Emily White, plus sophomore Alex Theodorou.  Scharf has been a steady and consistent AAer product top scores the last four seasons for ASU.  She scored above 39.5 six times last season and posted 19 scores of 9.9 or higher.   She's complemented by fellow grad student Reeves, who has competed AA in the past, although she typically competes VT (tuck Yurchenko 1 1/2), UB and BB.  White also competed AA regularly, hitting 39.4+ in five meets.  She racked up 7 event titles across all four events last season, and had 16 scores of 9.9+.  Classmate Clark was a top performer on UB and BB for the Gym Devils and also competed FX on a regular basis. She's also training VT, in order to break through in the AA.  Another senior, Mangahas, was named by the coaches to the Pac 12 Preseason Watch list, after a strong fall training period.  She competed primarily on VT, UB and FX last season but has competed on all four events.  Junior Theodorou has also competed as an AAer but excels on VT (10.0 Start Value Vault, UB and FX.  ASU also welcomes back Kayla Lee, who was the BB leadoff and competed on FX, and VT specialist Anaya Smith, who brings a strong Yurchenko 1 1/2 to anchor ASU on VT.  ASU also looks to get expanded contributions from Kimberly Smith, a sophomore, who excels on BB but is strong on all four events.  Senior Cassi Barbanente, who has struggled with injury, also looks strong during preseason training.

ASU welcomes four frosh to help strengthen the lineups.  Halle Gregoire is a L10 from American Gold.  In 2023, she tied for 3rd on FX (full-in) and placed 5th on VT (Yurchenko 1 1/2) enroute to a 27th place AA finish at the Women's Development Program (WDP) L10 Nationals.  She also placed 3rd on VT and tied for 15th AA at the 2022 WDP L10 Nationals.  Chavala Shepard is a L10 from Hopes and Dreams.  In 2023, she competed on three events at the WDP L10 Nationals.  She also tied for 8th on BB and finished 31st AA at the 2022 WDP L10 Nationals.  Unfortunately, she was not able to compete at the recent Maroon and Gold intrasquad.  Another frosh is Lilia Purler, a L10 from Fuzion.  She placed 7th on VT and 38th AA at the 2023 WDP L10 Nationals.  She was also 45th AA at the 2022 WDP L10 Nationals.  The final frosh, Chloe Seaga, is a L10 from the American Twisters.  She's a three-time L10 Regional qualifier who excels on VT.

ASU will look forward to return this season to the Regional final, with a large set of experienced returners to carry the way forward.  With minimal losses to graduation and the addition of Gregoire on VT and FX, ASU could be even stronger this season.  ASU will also need to close the gap on the leading contenders on BB, their lowest ranking event last season at #19.

 20.  Stanford Cardinal

Official Web Site:  Link      Schedule      Roster
Head Coach: Tabitha Yim
Assistants:  Hallie Mossett, Vince Smurro
Starting Routines Returning: 20/24
Routines Gone:  1 VT, 1 UB, 1 BB, 1 FX
Finish Last Season:  19th
Returning Starters (6):  Ira Alexeeva (Sr), Claire Dean (So), Brenna Neault (Jr), Taralyn Nguyen (So), Anna Roberts (So), Chloe Widner (5th Yr)
Other/Injured Returners (7):  Ashley Carter (So), Anapaula Gutierrez (Jr/I), Sandra Jessen (Sr), Katya Sander (Jr), Ava Sorrento (So), Porsche Trinidad (So/I), Amanda Zeng (Sr)
Graduated (3):  Madison Brunette, Jade Chrobok, Addie Stonecipher
Other Losses (1):  Isabela Onyshko (Sr/?)
Newcomers (4):  Victoria Cluck, Temple Landry, Sydney Razeghi, Sienna Robinson

Quick Assessment:   Stanford enters the 2024 season in 20th position, after finishing 19th last season.  They finished the Los Angeles Regional Semi-Final just 0.125 points behind Missouri.  Gone from that squad are a quartet of athletes and four routines, including Madison Brunette and Bela Onyshko.  Brunette was a dependable member of the Cardinal lineups on VT, UB and FX, providing steady consistency meet after meet.  Onyshko had battled injury over her career but competed on BB last season.  Stanford will be led by a small core of top returners, including AAers Claire Dean, Brenna Neault, Anna Roberts and Chloe Widner.  Stanford also welcomes back senior Ira Alexeeva and sophomore Taralyn Nguyen.  Widner earned first team All-American honors on BB last season and qualified to the NCAAs as an individual AAer.  She set career highs last season on all four events and posted a 39.625 AA career best.  Complementing her in the AA is junior Neault.  Competing AA for the Cardinal in 13 of 14 meets, she earned career highs on all four events and the AA (39.65).  Sophomore Roberts had a standout rookie campaign, competing AA in 13 of 14 meets and being named Stanford's Rookie of the Year.  She won 12 event titles during the season and hit an AA high of 39.575.  Classmate Dean progressed through the season as a BB, UB and FX regular and then added VT for the last three meets of the season.  Senior Alexeeva was a top performer on UB and BB, where her elite polish and execution produced some top scores.  Another sophomore, Nguyen, is a key performer on VT and FX, where she has the capability to compete some big skills.  She also competed on BB.  The Cardinal also welcome back 7 other returners, led by junior Anapaula Gutierrez.  She was a standout as a frosh, competing in all 14 meets and in the AA twice.

Stanford welcomes four frosh to the Farm for 2024.  Sienna Robinson leads the way.  A former junior international elite, she has competed L10 the last two seasons for the Gymcats.  In 2023, she tied for the UB title, 3rd on BB and placed 3rd AA at the Women's Development Program (WDP) L10 Nationals.  She also placed 2nd on BB and 9th on FX enroute to a 15th place AA finish at the 2022 WDP L10 Nationals.  She could have an immediate impact in 2024.  Temple Landry is from Twin City Twisters and has been focusing on elite the past several seasons.  She placed 10th AA at the GK Classic in 2021.  Classmate Victoria Cluck is a L10 from WOGA.  In 2023, she placed 34th AA at the WDP L10 Nationals.  She did not compete the post-season in 2022, but placed 2nd on VT, tied for 8th on FX and tied for 13th AA at the 2021 WDP L10 Nationals.  She could bring a much-needed strong VT to the Stanford lineup.  The final frosh, Sydney Razeghi, trains at World Champions Centre.  She did not compete in 2023 and missed the post-season in 2022.  In 2021, she tied for 9th AA at the WDP L10 Nationals.  She's a former L10 National champ (VT, 2018) and L10 National Team member (2019) but has been slowed by injury.

Stanford looks to break into the Regional Final and improve their preseason rank.  To do this, they will need to keep their core stars healthy and get gymnasts like Robinson to adapt quickly to college competition.  They could also get a boost from their remaining returners, especially Gutierrez.  Stanford lagged the rest of the field in the final regular season rankings, placing just 30th as a team on VT and 26th on FX.  Those two events will once again determine how high Stanford can rise this season.

 21.  Washington Huskies

Official Web Site:  Link      Schedule      Roster
Starting Routines Returning: 13/24
Routines Gone:  3 VT, 2 UB, 3 BB, 3 FX
Head Coach: Jennifer Llewellyn
Assistants: Jeffrey Langenstein, Cody Llewellyn, Brenna Brooks
Finish Last Season:  16th
Returning Starters (8):  Emily Innes (So), Deiah Moody (Jr), Lana Navarro (Jr), Thu Nguyen (So), Olivia Oppegard (So), Taylor Russon (Sr), Emma Schrady (So), Lilly Tubbs (So)
Other/Injured Returners (4):  Ashley Blum (Jr/I), Skylar Killough-Wilhelm (Sr), Caitlin McWilliams (So), Gabi Wickman (Sr)
Graduated (6):   Morgan Bowles, Brenna Brooks, Amara Cunningham, Kennedi Davis, Hadley Roberts, Isa Weiss
Other Losses (0):  N/A
Newcomers (6):  Kira Bolden, McKenna Carnesi, Chelsea Hallinan, Kristin Lin, Mary McDonough, Emily Pires (Jr/TR/UC Davis)

Quick Assessment:   Washington enters the preseason ranked 21st, down five positions from their 16th place finish last season.  Last season, they made the Regional Final, capitalizing on Auburn's mistakes but also exceeded preseason expectations.  They lose 11 routines from their last starting lineups in 2023, including VT/FX standout Amara Cunningham and three-event standouts Brenna Brooks and Kennedy Davis.  They also miss the services of two-event gymnasts Morgan Bowles and Hadley Roberts.  However, the Huskies return 8 starting athletes but it is one name that isn't listed who may have the biggest impact.  Skylar Killough-Wilhelm sat out the last competition of 2023.  Healthy and in strong form during the preseason, Wilhelm looks to exceed her 39.55 AA high set last season, with 9.9+ career highs across all four events.  Another returner named to the Pac-12 Watch List is junior Lana Navarro.  A standout on three events, she's hit for 9.9 on all three events.  Junior Deiah Moody adds a steady UB set and emerged as a top option on BB in 2023.  Top frosh from 2023 Emily Innes also returns on VT and FX and looks to add BB in 2024.  Senior Taylor Russon also competed in up to three events last season and has upgraded on UB (new dismount) and BB (new triple series).  Washington also welcomes back junior Ashley Blum, who missed last season with an injury. She's been a strong option on FX and VT, events where Washington needs some top marks.  Washington also looks to get expanded contributions from Lilly Tubbs, who competed on UB last season.  The entire sophomore class appears ready to contribute on more events this season.

Washington welcomes five frosh and one transfer.  The frosh class is perhaps Washington's strongest in some time, however their progress for this season has been slowed by injury.  Leading the way is Kristin Lin, a former L10 National Team member from Airborne. She placed 5th AA at the 2023 Women's Development Program L10 Nationals, tying for 5th on VT and 8th on FX.  She was 9th AA at the 2022 WDP L10 Nationals, taking the runner-up spot on FX and tying for 9th on UB.  She was also the FX champion in 2021.  McKenna Carnesi is a L10 from the Colorado Gymnastics Institute.  She placed 8th on VT and 19th AA at the 2023 WDP L10 Nationals.  She also tied for 19th AA at the 2022 WDP L10 Nationals.  She excels on VT, posting a 10 for Yurchenko Full last season.  Mary McDonough, a L10 from Let it Shine, had a stellar season in 2023, hitting 39.05 in the AA.  Unfortunately, she has been slowed by injury in the preseason and did not compete at the Purple and Gold intrasquad in December.  Frosh Kira Bolden is coming back from an injury suffered at the WDP L10 Nationals in May.  She placed 18th AA and tied for 2nd on VT (Yurchenko 1 1/2) at the 2022 WDP Nationals.  She was also 8th AA at the 2021 WDP L10 Nationals.  The final frosh, Chelsea Hallinan, is an in-state L10 from the Olympic Gymnastics Center.  She excels on BB, where she is a two-time Regional champion.  Transfer Emily Pires, a junior, comes to Washington from UC Davis, where she competed mainly on VT and FX.  She was named to the All-MSPF second team on VT in 2023 and the first team in 2023.

Washington looks to outperform preseason expectations and return to the Regional Final in 2024.  However, to do that they will need to replace a significant number (11) of starting routines from last season.  However, that task will be made easier with the return of star Williams as a top AAer, increased contributions from their sophomore class, and immediate contributions from frosh like Lin.  The Huskies may start the season slow, due to a lack of experience, but will likely build momentum during the season.

 22.  Arizona Wildcats

Official Web Site:  Link      Schedule      Roster

Routines Gone:  2 VT, 2 UB, 1 BB, 1 FX
Head Coach: John Court
Associate Head Coach:  Taylor Spears
Assistants:  Kylie Kratchwell
Finish Last Season:  21st
Returning Starters (8):  Jessica Castles (Sr), Elena Deets (Sr), Alysen Fears (Jr), Malia Hargrove (RS Sr), Caroline Herry (Sr), Bailey McCabe (Sr), Emily Mueller (Jr), Taylor Raskin (Sr)
Other/Injured Returners (8):  Lara Burhans (Sr), Madison Courney (Sr), Gianna Lenczner (So), Elizabeth LaRusso (Jr/I), Halli Mayberry (Sr), Jordan Schultz (So), Sophia Stephens (So), Emma Strom (So)
Graduated (3):  Zaza Brovedani, Danielle Nosek, Libby Orman
Other Losses (3):  Sirena Linton (Gr/TR/Arkansas), Halli Mayberry (Sr/?), Indigo Morgan (So/?)
Newcomers (6):  Sophie Derr, Ainsley Greeever, Haley Havenor, Sophia Maisel, Abigayle Martin, Tirzah Wise

Quick Assessment:  Arizona placed 21st in the final standings last year and see themselves down one spot, to #22, in the Preseason Coaches' Poll.  They lose 7 routines from last year's squad and feature a total of 16 returners.  The losses are headed up by Sirena Linton, who chose to pursue her extra grad year at Arkansas.  She's a former NCAA Individual national qualifier on BB and a top UB worker.  The 2024 Wildcats will be led by redshirt senior Malia Hargrove, seniors Jessica Castles and Caroline Herry plus junior Alysen Fears and Emily Mueller.  Hargrove is a standout on VT (Yurchenko 1 1/2) and FX (full-in) but hit a new career high in the AA with a 39.55 last season.  She also qualified to the NCAAs as an individual on FX in 2021.  Mueller is another AA competitor for the Wildcats who tied her career best of 39.35 in the AA at the Regional Semi-Final.  She set or tied career bests on UB, BB and FX last season.  Classmate Fears has also competed in up to four events for the Wildcats (career high of 39.35) but is strongest on the UB.  Senior Herry was a top competitor on up to three events last season, but shines on BB and FX with her stellar form and grace.  Classmate Castles earned career highs on VT and BB last season, but the former UK-Swedish elite has competed in the past in all four events.  Senior Elena Deets has competed on up to three events for the Wildcats and could see her contributions expand in 2024.  Unfortunately, junior Elizabeth La Russo, who competed in up to three events last season, appears to be out for the season with an elbow injury.

Arizona welcomes six talented frosh, who could have an immediate impact on lineups and help elevate the team.  Leading the way is Abigayle Martin, a former L10 National Team member from Pearland Elite.  She placed 3rd on UB and 7th AA at the 2023 Women's Development Program (WDP) L10 Nationals.  She also placed 3rd on FX, 5th on BB and tied for 20th AA at the 2022 WDP Nationals.  In 2021, she was the National co-champ on BB (Sr. A division).  Ainsley Greever is a L10 at Phenom.  She placed 2nd AA at the 2023 WDP L10 Nationals as an East All Star after placing 10th AA at Regionals.  She also finished 30th AA at the 2022 WDP Nationals.  Haley Havenor is a L10 from World Champions Centre.  She tied for 24th AA at the 2022 WDP L10 Nationals but competed on a limited basis on two events in 2023.   Sophie Maisel is another L10 from the World Champions Centre.  She tied for 30th AA at the 2023 WDP L10 Nationals and 35th AA at the 2022 WDP L10 Nationals.  Fellow Texan Sophie Derr is a L10 from WOGA.  In 2023, she competed primarily on three events, winning the UB (9.85 career best) in her division at four club meets and tying for 2nd at the 2023 Texas L10 State meet.  She also tied for 45th AA at the 2022 WDP L10 Nationals.  The final recruit, Tirzah Wise, is a L10 from Salcianu Elite who has also trained elite.  She had her strongest year in 2023, placing 8th on VT and tying for 13th AA at the 2023 WDP L10 Nationals.  She was also 22nd AA at the 2022 WDP L10 Nationals.

Arizona looks to continue their move up the rankings, with a large and strong set of returners, led by standouts like Fears, Hargrove and Meuller.  With a large and deep roster, any number of gymnasts, returners or frosh, could step up to fill the empty lineup spots and help lift the Wildcats into closer contention for the Regional Final.  Look out especially for top frosh Abigayle Martin, who could make an impact across all four events.

 23.  Iowa Hawkeyes

Official Web Site:  Link      Schedule      Roster
Head Coach: Larissa Libby
Assistants:  Quest Hayden, Jessa Hansen Parker, Rachel David
Starting Routines Returning: 21/24
Routines Gone:  1 VT, 1 UB, 1 BB, 0 FX
Finish Last Season:  26th
Returning Starters (11):  Hanna Castillo (So), Avery Chambers (So), Alexa Ebeling (Jr), Emily Erb (So), JerQuavia Henderson (5th Yr), Adeline Kenlin (Sr), Bailey Libby (So), Gianna Masella (So), Karina Munoz (So), Aubrey Nick (Sr), Marissa Rojas (Jr)
Other/Injured Returners (5): Alex Bradford (Jr), Kendall LaPlante (Sr), Haley Tyson (So), Kaia Vanney (So), Allison Zuhlke (Sr/I)
Graduated (2):  Ellie Rogers, Linda Zivat
Other Losses (1):  Kareena Mcsweeny (Sr/?)
Newcomers (5):  Olivia Dylnicki, Ilka Juk (Jr/TR/LIU), Alyse Karenbauer, Eva Volpe, Katelyn Wiederspahn

Quick Assessment:   Iowa looks to improve on last year's 26th place finish and 8th place finish at the Big Tens.  The good news is that they return 21 or 24 of their starting routines from their last lineup in 2023.  They lose just the three routines from senior Allison Zuhlke, who is out with an injury/surgery.  They've been voted into the 23rd rank in the Preseason Coaches' poll, reflecting a large returning roster and some talented newcomers.  Leading the charge in 2024 will be superstars Jerquavia Henderson and Adeline Kenlin, plus sophomore standout Karina Munoz.  Fifth year Henderson is a three-time regular season All American and the 2023 co-Big Ten FX Champ.  She can compete AA (39.5 career high) but stands out on VT (Yurchenko 1 1/2) and FX (full-in).  Kenlin, a senior, was the NCAA runner-up on BB in 2022 and is a two-time All American on BB (1 regular season, 1 NCAA).  She's also hit a 39.5 in the AA but competed mainly in UB, BB and FX last season.  Munoz made an immediate impression last season, including competing in the AA three times with a high of 39.4.  She captured seven event titles and went 9.9+ on all four events.  Iowa also welcomes back Hanna Castillo, a sophomore who competed primarily on VT and FX last season but who could be primed to contributed more, after a year of experience.  Likewise for classmate Gianna Masella, who competed on up to three events as a rookie but who was strongest on UB and VT.  Also returning is junior Marissa Rojas, who has competed on all four events for the GymHawks but who contributed primarily on UB and BB last season.

Iowa welcomes five newcomers, featuring four frosh and a transfer.  Leading the frosh is Eva Volpe, a four-time L10 National Qualifier from Pearland Elite.  She tied for 6th on UB and 8th on VT enroute to a 7th place AA finish at the 2023 Women's Development Program (WDP) L10 Nationals.  She also finished 16th AA at the 2022 WDP L10 Nationals.  Alyse Karenbauer is a L10 from X-Cel.  In 2023, she tied for 2nd on VT (Yurchenko 1 1/2) and placed 14th AA at the WDP L10 Nationals.  She also placed 7th on VT and 36th AA at the 2022 WDP L10 Nationals.  Like Volpe, she's competed a full-in on FX.  Hailing from Apex Gymnastics, Olivia Dylnick is two-time L10 National qualifier.  The final frosh, Katelyn Wiederspahn, is a two-time L10 Regional Qualifier from Gymnastics Olympica.  Ilka Juk, a junior, is a former Canadian and Hungrian National Team member who has competed on up to three events at LIU.  She excels on BB, with an assortment of high level skills and combinations that could lend a boost to Iowa's BB lineup.

Iowa looks to improve upon last year's 26th place finish on the strength of a large cast of returning gymnasts and some talented newcomers.  For Iowa, the key events in 2024 may be UB and BB.  In the final regular season National Qualifying Score (NQS) standings, they finished just 36th on UB and 26th on BB.  While VT and FX remain strengths, they'll need some to make some strides on those two events to catch up to the competitive pack at Regionals.

 24.  SUU Thunderbirds

Official Web Site:  Link      Schedule      Roster
Starting Routines Returning: 9/24
Routines Gone:  4 VT, 4 UB, 4 BB, 3 FX
Head Coach: Scotty Bauman
Associate Head Coach:  Jamie Wysong
Assistant: Jeff Richards
Finish Last Season:  22nd
Returning Starters (5):  Ellie Cacciola (Jr), Taylor Gull (Jr), Isabella Neff (Jr), Kayla Pardue (So), Aubri Schwartze (Sr)
Other/Injured Returners (6):  Aly Coutu (Sr), Trista Goodman (So), Anna Hartley (Sr), Kennedi McClain (So), Amelia Rieder (So), Ellie Thomson (So)
Graduated (10):  Celine Barney, Mayson Bentley, Ruby Hernandez, Caitlin Kho, Kaylee Kho, Karley McClain, Shylen Murakami, Rachel Smith, Tiffani Stufflebeam, Nikki Thomas
Other Losses (6):  Emma Ingrassia (Sr/R), Megan Locke (So/R), Camry Miller (So/?), Olivia Orlando (So/?), Hailey Vultaggio (Sr/?), Jocelyn Wittwer (Jr/?)
Newcomers (12):  Elliot Bringhurst, Brinlee Christensen, Marisa de Groot, Maria Ferguson, Alyssa Fernandez, Mackenzie Kelly, Brinley Kitchen, Caralia Martinez, Kendall McGuire, Rylee Miller, Niya Randolph, Alex Routsis

Quick Assessment:   SUU had one of their strongest finishes in 2023, placing 22nd in the final rankings.  However, they return just 9 routines from their final lineups in 2023.  This is a huge challenge, following the loss of 16 athletes from the 2023 roster.   Among these many losses were stars Karley McClain, Shylen Murakami and Rachel Smith.  The trio represented the core of the Flippin' Tbird lineups the last five seasons.  McClain was the top AAer for the Thunderbirds and the 2023 MRGC Gymnast of the Year.  With a career high of 39.525 in the AA, she was a consistent, high scoring piece of every lineup.  Murakami was a standout on UB and BB and was named All-MRGC First Team on the UB.  Rachel Smith was a key contributor on up to three events, with career highs of 9.9+ on VT, BB and FX.  SUU also loses key contributors in Caitlin Kho and Hailey Vultaggio.  The elder Kho competed on up to three events for SUU and brought a Yurchenko 1 1/2 to the VT lineup. (Sister Kaylee also graduated).  Vultaggio left the squad for 2024, after being a key contributor on three events for the Flippin' Birds.  Despite the loss of 16 athletes, SUU still returns five starts and 6 other returners from 2023.  The returners are led by junior Ellie Cacciola and senior Aubri Schwartze.  Cacciola competed in up to three events and was named to the All-MRGC First Team on BB last season.  Schwartze was the MRGC Freshman of the Year in 2021 and was named to the All-MRGC First Team on FX last season.  She contributes in up to three events.  SUU also returns six other gymnasts, led by Trista Goodman.  Goodman is a former junior elite and L10 National Team member who competed on UB last season.  The T-birds could use Goodman healthy and at the full range of her capabilities.

SUU brings in a huge class of 12 frosh to help offset the loss of the 16 departed athletes.  Among the potential standouts are Brinlee Christensen, Rylee Miller and Niya Randolph.  Christensen is a top L10 from Olympus.  She tied for 5th on UB and placed 16th AA at the 2023 Women's Development Program (WDP) L10 Nationals.  She also tied for 4th on UB and placed 8th AA at the 2022 WDP L10 Nationals.  She also has posted a 10 on VT.  Miller is a former Canadian senior high performance (elite) competitor and a three-time Canadian National Team member.  As a Canadian L10 in 2023, she placed 2nd AA, UB and FX and 3rd on BB at the 2023 Canadian Championships (CCP10 16+).  As a senior high performance athlete, she placed 12th overall at the 2022 Canadian Championships.  Randolph is another top in-state L10 from Gymcats who excel on VT (clean Yurchenko full) and FX (double layout).  In 2023, she tied for 18th AA at the WDP L10 Nationals.  She was also the vault co-champ in at the 2022 WDP L10 Nationals (Sr C), where she also tied for 11th AA.  Caralia Martinez is a L10 from Arete in Utah who has competed elite for Puerto Rico.  She's a two-time L10 Regional qualifier and a two-time runner-up on FX at the Utah state L10 championships.  Alex Routsis is a two-time L10 National qualifier from Precizion 509 in Colorado.  She won the 2023 Region 1 L10 UB title with a remarkable 9.925 and then went on to place 4th on the event at the 2023 WDP L10 Nationals.  She also tied for 7th on UB and 33rd AA at the 2021 WDP L10 Nationals.  Another Canadian, de Groot is a former junior High Performance (elite) athlete from Calgary Gym Centre.  As a Canadian L10 in 2023, competing on two events, she placed 2nd on BB at the Alberta Provincial Championships.  Elliot Bringhurst is another in-state L10 from Brown's Las Vegas.  She tied for 2nd on VT and BB and placed 3rd on FX at the 2023 Region 1 L10 Regionals.  She did not compete on UB in 2023.  Qualifying to the WDP L10 Nationals as an All-Star, she placed 1st on BB and 4th(t) on VT.  Kendall McGuire is a L10 National Qualifier from Florida Elite.  She competed primarily on UB last season.  Maria Ferguson is a 2023 WDO L10 National Qualifier (All-Star individual event specialist, UB) who was the state L10 co-champ on UB in 2023.  Fernandez is a L10 from Flames.  She placed 24th AA at the 2022 WDP L10 Nationals but did not compete the full club season in 2023.  Mackenzie Kelly is an-instate a L10 National Qualifier from Flips USA.  She placed 4th on VT and 3rd on FX at the 2023 Nevada L10 State meet.  Also hailing from Brown's Las Vegas is Brinley Kitchen, a three-time L10 Regional qualifier.

SUU has the fewest number of routines returning in 2023 among any team in the Top 25.  What's more, the Flippin' Birds have lost most of their top gymnasts from last year's 22nd place squad.  Fortunately, the squad has another large roster to compensate for the loss of 16 athletes from 2023.  While athletes like Cacciola and Schwartze will lead the squad, they will need plenty of help from the other returners and top newcomers like Christensen, Miller, and Randolph.  SUU may start slow due to the high number of newcomers but should build momentum as the season progresses.

Quick Assessment:  Maryland had one of their best seasons ever, placing 23rd in the final rankings.  They slot in #25 in the Preseason Coaches' rankings.  They return 18 of 24 routines in 2023, saying goodbye to some key sets from Reese McClure, Alexsis Rubio and Aleka Tsiknias.  McClure competed on three events for the Terps with career highs of 9.9 or higher and was a two-time second team All-Big Ten awardee.  Rubio competed on up to four events during her career but was the top vaulter on last year's squad.  Tsiknias competed on up to three events for Maryland but was the top competitor in 2023 on UB, hitting 9.9+ four times.  UMD however returns no less than 10 starters from the last meet in 2023, plus five other returners.  The returners are headed up by Josephine Kogler, Maddie Komoroski and Emma Silberman.  Silberman was the Terps sole AAer last season, posting a season high of 39.4 and competing in all four events at every meet.  She was named to the second team All-Big Ten in 2023.  Kogler was a regular on VT and BB last season, earning 2nd team All-Big Ten honors.  She posted six score of 9.9+ on the BB.  Komoroski led the Terps in BB scoring in 2023 as a frosh, posting season bests of 9.9+ on BB and FX.  The Terps also return Rhea Leblanc, Taylor Rech and Olivia Weir.  Leblanc, a junior, competed in all 14 meets on UB and BB.  Rech, a sophomore, competed on FX and VT, posting a season high of 9.875 on FX in her rookie campaign.  Senior Weir has competed in up to three events for the Terps.  She competed primarily on VT last season but also on BB.  Also returning is junior Victoria Gatzendorfer, who transferred from Missouri last season. She competed primarily on UB and BB, but could see her contributions expand.

Maryland welcomes six frosh and one transfer for 2024.  Natalie Martin is the top newcomer, having been named to the Big Ten Newcomer Watch List for 2024.  A L10 from Buckeye, she tied for 5th on VT, 7th on BB, 8th on FX and placed 9th AA at the 2023 Women's Development Program (WDP) L10 Nationals.  She also tied for 7th on UB and placed 21st AA at the 2022 WDP L10 Nationals.  Logan Buckmon is a L10 from Hill's.  She tied for 23rd AA at the 2023 WDP L10 Nationals.  She also placed 5th on BB and 22nd AA at the 2022 WDP L10 Nationals.  Lauren Brendlinger is a 2023 L10 National qualifier from Capital (VA) who missed the 2nd half of the 2022 club season.  She was 3rd on BB and FX at the 2023 Virginia L10 State meet.  Bella Ferraccio is a L10 from First State in Delaware.  She tied for 30th AA at the 2022 WDP L10 Nationals.  She missed the 2023 club season.  Layla Hammer is a L10 from Legacy Elite.  She tied for 8th on BB and placed 16th AA at the 2022 WDP L10 Nationals.  However, she did not compete during the 2023 Level 10 season.  Gianna Ruffing hails from Massachusetts, where she trained at the Elite Gymnastics Academy.  She won the 2023 UB and AA titles at the Massachusetts L10 State meet.  She also won the BB at the 2022 Region 6 L10 Regionals, advancing to the 2022 WDP Nationals as an All-Star event specialist.  Finally, the Terrapins welcome NC State transfer Hailey Merchant.  The junior competed on up to three events for the Wolfpack, but primarily on UB.

Maryland looks to continue their rise up the rankings, on the strength of large and experienced group of 15 returners from 2023.  They do have six routines they will need to replace, but the large roster gives them plenty of options.  In addition, top frosh like Martin and Buckmon could challenge for roster spots immediately.  As long as they avoid injuries to their key athletes, look for Maryland to continue to improve.
