Women's NCAA Event Finals: Recap

Kat Ding of Georgia won bars and floor to lead all athletes at the NCAA Women's Event Finals for 2012.  AA champ Kytra Hunter added a title on vault, while Bama's Geralen Stack-Eaton won the beam.

Vault

In a final marked by only three athletes attempting two 10.0 vaults, Kytra Hunter came out on top.  The 2012 AA champ came up with a near stick on her Yurchenko Layout 1 1/2 and then landed a Yurechenko Layout Full with a large step to secure the win.  She outpaced Bama's Diandra Milliner, who threw the same two vaults for 2nd.  Georgia's Kat Ding stuck a solid Yurchenko Layout full and then added a tucked version (with a step) for 3rd.  Defending champ Marissa King had a low landing on her Tsuakahara Layout Full, after landing a Tsukahara Layout 1 1/2.

Bars

The 2012 bars title was defended by UGA's Kat Ding, who hit a near perfect set for a 9.9875.  She hit her Tkachev and Pak salto, and dismounted with a stuck double layout.  Stanford frosh Sami Shapiro showed great lines and a nice straddle Jaeger and stuck full-in dismount for 2nd.  UCLA's Oliva Courtney went up early on and hit her set for third.

Beam

Geralen Stack-Eaton of Bama upgraded her set for Finals and came away with the win.  Stack-Eaton added back her Onodi into her set, sticking her 1 1/2 twist dismount for the win.  OU's Megan Ferguson hit her bhs-layout-layout to one knee series and her double twist dismount for 2nd.  Arizona's Katie Matusik qualified all the way through Regionals as an individual, hitting a front aerial to scale to take third.  Defending champ Samantha Peszek of UCLA had a balance break on her standing back tuck with a full twist.

Floor

Kat Ding collected her second win on the night, posting a 9.95 to win floor.  She opened with a Rudi to straddle jump to punch front, landed a double pike 2nd pass, and closed with a double full to punch layout.  Defending champ Stack-Eaton hit her Arabian Double front to open, back layout 1 1/2 twist to front layout and double pike to  tie for 2nd with UCLA's Ellyse Hopfner-Hibbs.  Hopfner-Hibbs opened with a double tuck and closed with a double pike, both stuck well.
