World Championships: NCAA Related Athletes in Prelims

Past, present and future NCAAers were in action at the World Gymnastics Championships in Doha this weekend.  Here's how they fared in the preliminary rounds:

Women's

The US women posted a huge 9 point lead in the Preliminaries, paced by the incredible Simone Biles.  Florida commit Morgan Hurd was 2nd AA and qualified to the finals on UB and FX.  Also contributing were Florida commit Riley McCusker and Utah commit Grace McCallum.  Uncommitted Kara Eaker made the BB finals. 

Canada placed fourth in the prelims, with Bama frosh Shallon Olsen qualifying to the VT final.  Former UCLA star Danusia Francis (Jamaica), former DU star Simona Castro (Chile), future Cal Bear Frida Esparza (Mexico), UNC commit Tienna Nguyen (Vietnam) and Bama commit Corinne Bunagan (Philippines) also competed.. 

 

Men's

In the Men's competition, the US placed 4th, led by the 3rd place AA finish of former NCAA champ and Michigan star Sam Mikulak.  OU's Yul Moldauer also qualified to the AA and FX finals.  Also contributing were former Stanford star Akash Modi, former Sooner Colin Van Wicklen and Ohio State's Alec Yoder.

Canada placed 18th.  Their squad included former Iowa standout Cory Paterson and PSU's Sam Zakutney. 

Also competing were Ryan Sheppard (Hungary, former Stanford), Tyson Bull (Australia, former Illinois), Clay Mason Stephens (Australia, Illinois), Yordan Aleksandrov (Bulgaria, former Cal), Franz Card (Finland, former PSU), Mikhail Koudinov (NZL, former Ohio State) and Stephen Lewis (Jamaica, Springfield).
