World Gymnastics Championships: Women's Prelims

Written by

Simone Biles qualified to four event finals and placed 1st AA to lead the US to the top spot in qualifying.  AU commit Sunisa Lee is 2nd, and qualified on to AA, UB and FX finals.  Oregon State commit Jade Carey edged Biles for the top qualifying spot on VT.  Bama star Shallon Olsen also qualified to the VT finals for Canada.  UCLA commit Brooklyn Moors of Canada is the first reserve on FX, after an inquiry took down her score by 0.1.  Utah commit Kara Eaker is the first reserve on BB, after an inquiry took down her start value by 0.4 points, and dropped her out of qualifying.

The qualifications also served as a team and individual AA qualifier for the 2020 Olympics.  Former UCLA standout Danusia Francis qualified as an AAer.  Update:  The FIG has thus far confirmed 20 women in the AA.  They will name more after the event finals, with Simona Castro of Chile (ex DU) and Ariana Orrego of Peru (Iowa State) in position.

Besides the US, China and Russia, who had previously qualified, France, Canada, the Netherlands, Great Britain, Italy, Germany, Belgium, Japan and Spain made the cut.  There are additional methods of qualifying extending into 2020, including the World Cup series and the Continental Championships.  The biggest surprise in the prelims was that Brazil failed to make the cut, with injuries to key athletes, including at the meet itself.
