Going into the final round, four teams were separated by just 0.25. Already finished were UCLA and UGA. The Bruins finished with a 197.1, after a weak finish on vault, and UGA notched a 196.675, after a slow start on floor.
Heading into the final round, Bama held a slightly lead over UF, with OU and LSU close behind. UF proceeded to hit their sets "lights out" on the bars, while Bama suffered a fall on beam from Sarah DeMeo and a shaky set from Kayla Williams. OU came up short on floor (a high scoring event this evening), while LSU could not find the sticks they needed on vault.
All did not start well for the Gators, with falls from Ashanee Dickerson and Kytra Hunter on the first event. However, as on Friday, Bridget Sloan saved the day with a 9.95. The beam falls brought to mind past troubles in the Super Six finals, that have created a "monkey on the back" of the squad, at least in the words of Coach Rhonda Faehn. Rather than crumble, the Gators came back even stronger on the remaining events. They posted a 49.725 on floor and then blasted past the field with a 49.5 on vault. When the outcome on bars made the victory clear, the team and Coach Faehn were overcome with emotion. After so many years and so many talented recruiting classes, the arguably most physically talented and most decorated squad in the country finally won their first National Title.
